actually I would love to see a War Academy type tag for new players then clans that want to war can use this to train new recruits into their tag. Kind of like bootcamp, but it would take a buy in from warring clans to provide the leadership in something like this.

I honestly do not think LaF has much to do with the direction in which the game is being developed. If anything, LaF is looking for ways to grow the player base. They are just as crippled as any other alliance in having to adjust to the smaller player base.

In all honesty they cannot at this point create any sub-tags to take advantage of any potential game mechanics being introduced.

We all collectively recognize the player-base needs to grow, we need much younger blood to join in, the current base is older with many other RL responsibilities hampering their ability to play or even contribute like they did 10-15 years ago.

We also know this is not some fancy Facebook FarmVille game. yet we still need a way for this game to evolve so it appeals to a 16-25 year old crowd. 20 years ago the game was cutting edge, with it's ability to sustain 40K countries on a server. Now if could get 10% of that and retain it we would all consider it fairly awesome.

a main question here is what made you stick around for all these years? Relationships aside, what is it about the game itself that appeals to you. Concentrate on those, aspects, and think back to when you first started playing and did not know anyone, what was it that kept you coming back.

Personally for the most part I enjoy the math involved, the spreadsheets, and having to think about the moves being made. For me I would say in today's day and age your best candidates will be found in chess clubs, math clubs, physics, and stem programs. You are not going to attract gamers who primarily play 1st person shooters in any large numbers and retain them. Ditto for for players who play Sims, and are paying attention to minute details of the city they are playing.

On the flip-side of this is the brutal fact new players are not going to stick around if they get their asses handed to them reset after reset. This problem goes way back and back then it was more about RD bots and multies than suiciders. If you want the game to grow then you need to pass that torch to a newer generation and teach them what you know about it. Take the time to write up guides and strategies, answer the questions being asked etc.

actually to do what I am proposing, would take a deep dive into the code and mechanics of the game. I know the post I made makes it sound simple and easy, but it would be far from that. to create modules that call many different functions from a set of centralized libraries is akin to a complete rewrite of the game. However in doing this exercise you can keep the spirit of the game itself alive while making the necessary changes to achieve the balance we as a community would need to agree to. many of the more basic formulas would not need to change i.e production rates explore build per turn.

what could change however is how diplomacy works in the sense of what you can and cannot hit , while war tags may see it as nerfing their potential to attack whatever they want it would be sacrifice in the sense of allowing for tags willing to mentor new players to grow. You could make it so even those tags can only use this mechanism for an agreed upon number of resets, and then need to play outside of said protection. The clans internally can make it so only players who stayed and participated in the non-protected reset are brought back in the next round. If you abandon the tag during hard time then you wait for 2-3 reset before you can tag back up with those you left to fend for themselves. You earn your place in the tag and tested for your loyalty to the tag. this may seem foreign to some, but this is how you build up strong clans, where members are willing to fight for those next to them.

what is also desperately needed is a sense of ownership. the key here is to allow players to create their own personal profile pages. a simple wysiwyg editor that allows for pictures, perhaps a video or two and a little html code can go a long way in providing player retention. Player designs it the way they want within PG13 norms and highlights what they feel this game is all about. It also creates a much richer experience for newer players to explore thru the various profiles and get a feel for the player-base. What are your war stats, and or net-gaining stats.. did a player just retal someone for 6k+acres and they need a place to memorialize it, this would give them the opportunity to do so. give the players something they own for themselves and something to play with and be creative with outside of the game and forums. Countries disappear, forum post get buried, profile page remains upfront and it is a evolving self expression of the player representing their own personal experiences with the game. Their friends, clan-mates, along with their best and worst moments. You could probably lure a lot of old timers back in if they had the ability to memorialize their years of playing this game on their own set of pages.

--- do they agree with or even aware of the unwritten rules.
--- even if they do agree with the rules are they willing to take the risk just as you did. In their case going the extra step to break GDI to get their land back: calculating you would not break your own GDI and in their case they were semi-correct in that you waited too long to pull the trigger.

my post is in agreement with the dangers and high risks taken when hitting live players, it also demonstrates the volatility of the risk being taken... all it takes is one player having a bad week looking to share their anguish with you and in some cases it can get really ugly really fast. -- You knew this, which is precisely why you did not break GDI.

its like going to Vegas expecting to win. You might be on a lucky streak taking the house down, feeling invincible with the odds in your favor. the one thing you forgot about during your winning streak though was the casino you are playing in -- is successfully paying their light bill. They do not care that you are winning they just need you to keep gambling, i.e. you win they comp you a room, free food and a massage -- eventually the house wins and you get to help pay for the light bill.

Clan GDI may or may not be a good thing, it will really depend on what is actually deployed. I will however caution on MMRs if done incorrectly it will push All-xers to start hitting bots, dropping all available bots into much deeper DRs thereby tempting much more aggressive players to hit non-bot countries. top countries rarely care how they achieve land goal in x amount of turns and will adjust accordingly. If bots become nonviable they will find alternate means.

Personally I feel growing the player base would solve many issues... but it would take few things to accomplish.

the community as a whole would need to be more helpful toward newer players, teach them how to play the game. guide them thru what works and what does not work.share your experiences openly.

let the past go, it happened, it's over done and gone, you cannot change it so move on toward a more positive mode of game play. basically just enjoy the game and allow others to do the same.

next is the big one -- do we have a graphic artist in house ??? alternately get a quote from freelance.com then use gofundme / indiegogo to fund the project.

make it so players click on a picture of a building and get action submenus and small report boxes for the building they clicked on.

place the buildings on an isometric grid, and make it so buildings change as you get more of that type of building. maybe something like 12-15 seperate designs per building type and it changes based on number of acres built with this building.

take a look at forge of empires and Elvenar they are basically the same as what we have here in that they are still at their core text based games the wrapping is just prettier to look at.

to this I must agree, bottom-feeding a real player in express with so many turns available is very dangerous. In general I try to be nice if I cannot take a retal in 150-180 turns I will usually just let it go. Although based on general (unwritten but agreed upon) retal rules (based on alliance-type pacts) a player does have 3 days worth of turns to take the retal. So based on that alone it would in general still be more than fair to retal between 180 - 240 turns.

and don't RoR if they got you the first time they will most definitely get you the second time :) all that does is save a player from having to use more turns than normal. For example I gained 3K acres in two retals this reset, one of which was a retal on an RoR. This was highly opportunistic for me. It saved me 150+ exploring turns, just as I completed rebuilding from my tech-phase.

Personally I do try to make the retal as lopsided as I possibly can, it's my way of saying "hey I'm an all-x go pick on someone who is actually land-grabbing like you." I also play an FFO which in general terms is a really bad idea to land-grab. When grabbing an FFO you are in effect land-grabbing one of the most efficient war-strat countries in the game. Played correctly it will own your ass +90% of the time.

Consider this:

turns taken = 1500 -- there are about 400 turns left in the reset
FFO sitting @ 8800 acres
-- 650 mil cash worth of bushel or about 4 mil jets
-- incoming cash about 500k per turn
-- 1.2 mil oil enough to move 30 mil units
-- A SPAL of 35-40
-- weapons tech @144
-- mil-strat @133
and a potential of: CM:17 | NM: 10 | EM 7 -- MISSILES

WHY IN THE WORLD WOULD YOU EVER WANT TO HIT THIS COUNTRY???

ok so you are 2-3 its size now looking at it with impunity from 12-15 mil net thinking an easy 800 -1200 acres taken from a country @ 4.2 -4.3 mil net -- it's only about a 2 mil jet PS not bad for a loss of about 400k jets

240 TURNS LATER

same all-x country you hit is now at:(conservatively i.e worst case scenario)
12K acres
an additional 1.6 billion in cash or 9.5 mil jets
plenty of oil to move a total of 13.5 mil jets
with weapons and PS multipliers = 29 million jets
if you include potential tech sell off its another 600 mil
the PS jet count jumps to 35 mil jets

and they have another 160 turns to hit you with
oh and the missile count is probably somewhere in the neighborhood of
CM: 27 | NM:15 | EM:12

Now the player you are up against does not play nice or is having a really bad day / week / month / year
-- about 3 years ago bad year would have applied to me

launch 12 EMs -- lower your overall military strength
4 PS -- roughly 11K acres -->>> 3 EMS | PS 1 - | - 3 EMS | PS 2 - | - 3 EMS | PS 3 - | - 3 EMS | PS 4 | = 32 TURNS
launch 15 Nukes about another 5-7 K acres = 30 TURNS
launch 27 chems -- your reset is over and done with in 120 turns = 54 TURNS
and with a speed-kill/ 5 tabs and the refresh button this is done and over with in under 3 minutes

it's not that I do not know how it's more like I choose not to, and many of the live all-x players are old timers who can pretty much do the same if they desired to do so.

reading thru the boards it looks like #101 hit you twice definitely breaking GDI -- it should have allowed you to do whatever you wanted --- perhaps a bug that needs to be fixed ???

--- I would definitely post it in the [BUGS] Section if it did not let you get your retals in.

my understanding of GDI is if you hit a country a second time then GDI rules no longer apply if the country you hit wants to hit back -- it would be full on open season anything goes. the country you hit would be able to do whatever they like -- missiles / abs / br / gs / ps / ss and any spy op they wanted. this applies both ways considering you were the one hit this should have been available to you.

when to start land grabbing depends on a few variables

can you get better land by exploring or thru land grabbing

early on you probably will not have any noticeable amounts of mil-strat tech so not really a factor.
bot DRs on the other hand will affect your returns, if too low, it may be more beneficial to just do a mass explore.
jets and oil -- are another factor /market price can reduce your ability to keep hitting at a sustained rate.
-- this is a cost vs. no cost calculation you need to make for yourself. guaranteed 90 acres per 2 turns at no cost vs. a potential of 150 acres per 2 turns @ whatever it costs for jets/oil to get those acres.
another factor is the ability to hang on to those acres, if you do not have the appropriate defense on the ground then you are just getting land for someone else. especially if you are land-grabbing non-bot countries - that little country can be grow quite big in the 360+ turns they may choose to use before retaling a land grab against them. this is not primary where they max out at 80 or so turns.


@1945 acres explore rate = 45
to double the land: 3840 Acres
21-22 turns of actual land grabbing @ an average of 90 acres per SS/PS
or
43-44 turns of exploring

@3840 acres explore rate = 26
to double the land: 7680 Acres
74-75- turns of actual land grabbing @ an average of 52 acres per SS/PS
