I don't know why this is a "what is the generally accepted policy??" debate because the policy has always been pretty clear IMO...

I think the debate should just be whether NA is looking to change policy to something new or if they are just trying to push an issue on an unpacted alliance.

It doesn't matter if people are on staff or not... there's been enough harassing going on and it's only getting worse. This dates back over a year, and it's getting ridiculous, like I said.

I've been very candid about reasons I want this to stop, none are "because he's staff", but there is an added incentive to have Slagpit work more on game issues and not have this whole vendetta stuff going on from both sides.

This is something that I want everyone to work through.... it's not an issue of "SS and aponic, stop bugging slagpit!" it's more of a "ok, everyone is being ridiculous and it needs to stop it."
That's why I say that everyone involved needs to start avoiding interacting with each other until everyone can grow up a little more.

I want Slagpit to spend his EE time working on improving the game and SS and aponic should both work on winning alliance with the new rules.

more countries does not equal more revenue. revenue is generated per player, not per country they own.

again, I'll present the idea i brought forward for a few other server type ideas.... we could consider doing a shorter, quicker FFA style game once or twice a year... champions league kind of stuff, where there is a higher limit and higher turn rate or something.

I don't really want to get much into this sort of discussion.... but I'll try to steer the conversation away from the inflammatory things here and towards something more constructive....

I've started talking with some of the SoL leaders about ways in which we can create an environment where everyone can thrive. I think everyone on both sides realize that these types of wars are just bad for all involved.... major win one set for one side, complete loss the next set, lather, rinse, repeat.

This is something which myself and a few other non-partisan staffers want to initiate, as we feel it's a good time to move forward as we prep to expand the community.

There are a plethora of things that need to be done to make this server successful again, but we need to begin taking those steps together so we can move out of perpetual cycle of having the same wars reset after reset -- regardless of who anyone thinks is to blame.

We picked 15 to test bandwidth.... we could consider upping it to 16 for setting up ally rings, I'd be open to that for sure.

FFA takes up a big chunk of bandwidth, I think more than all the other servers combined, so I'll let qz comment on that a bit more since he has the most up-to-date numbers.

but while I'm on the thread, I would say that the FFA "experiment" was a success, and the server will continue to be around indefinitely.

Yes, recruitment threads are fine as long as they're done in moderation. They are still subject to the same spamming guidelines that all threads are, but if you post a recruitment thread on another server's board, that is fine.

I think the point I want to really hammer home is that we don't need the kind of threads where it's basically like "hey everyone, look at what this person did on another server! that has direct implications on how they will play on this server!" when I don't actually believe that is the case for the majority of players.

I've noticed there have been some attempts to bring issues across servers, and present them to community in that context...

While we don't really have strict rules around what content is put on specific server forums, content that has the majority of its relevant to other forums/servers must be put there. It is not appropriate to start discussions around another server's ingame issues and present them as if they are relevant to other servers.

On that topic, many people play other servers in different ways.... for instance, I play Alliance and Team server. On the alliance server, I play in LaF and am bound by the policies they have. I play team with individuals from LaF, WoG, Rage, SoF.... whoever is up for creating a team. We don't have the same values or play the same way we would on the Alliance server.

If people carry things across servers for their own personal reasons, that should be kept between the parties involved. There's too many pure hate threads starting up now, and like I said previously, everyone needs to chill and work to simply avoid each other.

This is an unneeded distraction and there is plenty of blame to go around for the issue I'm obviously speaking of. If I have to get more involved and keep everyone in line, that's fine, but I would like to see everyone just stop the madness and realize that while we may not agree with everything everyone does, we're all in this together.

Step one to rebuilding a proper community is to ensure that the seed community we have is no longer a toxic environment, and rehashing the same grudges over and over again is a major detriment to this goal.

there is no need to make it such a personal thing.... the practice of calling anyone who doesn't agree with you a liar needs to stop... that happens way too much around here.

I also ask that if people with mod & staff tags feel the need to fight it out with eachother, that you do it in private, like maki and I do :p

different political beliefs and backgrounds is what makes our staff unique, skillful and most importantly legitimate. We should make an effort to handle these sort of issues in private, rather than flaming it up :D

and before anyone says "but pang, you're the worst one!", I know I'm guilty of it as well, and I have curbed it for that reason.

I agree with what SG says....

if you want to push these policies, you need political backing on a broader sense or be prepared to fight for it. We saw this in 1a, where we had two sides both willing to fight for their ideals (cross retalling vs non cross retalling) and the same sort of thing could happen here.

TAN's heart is in the right place for sure... but major changes to policies from one reset to the next can never end well for those who push for the changes unless they are prepared to fight for it...

laf did with Land:Land, IX/WoG did with the pactless stuff, is PDM ready to fight to go back to 1:1 escalating?

spicing things up is all well and good, but I think that alliances also need to take into account their own survival/thriving as well. I don't want to see PDM gone from the game, I'd like to see them flourish....

pointing the finger at specific alliances is just stupid.

I could point the finger back at most of the alliances in the game, including those of every single person trying to claim LaF is the big bad grabbers that ruin the game. I think servant did a good job explaining the overall negative aspects... all of which have a much bigger impact the the game. Also, remember that LaF did all of their "evil policy" stuff within in the confines of the game... other alliances accepted LaF's policies in the end, so no one can really fault LaF when the entire server used those policies for a good 4 or 5 years.

but like slag said, we can look back as to why things didn't work... or we can look to the future.
Or we can just look at other servers as the primary means for attracting/retaining new players, which is what I have been pushing for a long time. :p

Alliance is meant to be the showcase server for the game.. the major leagues, the big time... it's the culmination of everything that is part of the game -- wars, netting, and politics. I always thought that if we rebuilt the game properly, the politics would adjust to help promote the server and the game. It's actually gone the other direction, and that is unfortunate.

ya, LaF's policies didn't kill the game... other factors did

but there is a core reason why we are not planning to shop alliance server to new players immediately... and that is the political/land state of this server.

We have other plans for the land issue, but I really think that this server's alliances need to start thinking about the kind of environment we want to have on this server.

the thing is that everyone needs to buy into it. if you get drafted by a team you don't want to play with, you can't just screw them over or something, or the server won't work.

so I think as a normal server, definitely no... but as a bonus holiday server or something, it could be cool.... especially if it had more of an express style format... champions league or something :p

my stance is still that removing the 2b limit alone with the server the size it is will really mess things up, and the ensuing panic will be bad for the game

moving forward, including 2b limit removal as part of a large basket of changes which are planned and announced well ahead of time is definitely an avenue that I'd like to see us go down.... there is no longer a technical reason for the 2b limit... then let's remove it. But let's do it smartly so we don't completely fubar a game that's taken lots of effort to rebuild right before we're going to start marketing it.

Unusellable or massively devalued stock, which is something I think we all agree will happen with the 2b removal, is something that will turn off players, and those players will turn off the types of players we need to keep - more casual players.

well, along the same lines as archaic and others said, I don't think it's viable to change the way cash works without changing the way bushels and oil work too.

We're unbalancing what has become a very 'balanced' and important aspect of the game by simply altering cash and not changing how other aspects of the game function

I also agree that devaluing bushels -- which I think everyone agrees this will do -- is a big detriment to fighters over netters, as netters keep their bushels and fighters are consistently selling their bushels. This is something we need to keep in mind as well.

we'll always see food bubbles based on the nature of stocking... the only difference is the frequency with which it deflates, the height it gets to and how many players are able to sell over the peak

also, having standing orders will allow people to recall their bushels in an attempt to undercut eachother, turning a 4-6 day crash into a 8 hour crash, where only a handful of players get ALL their bushels destocked, while others get none destocked.

we would need to put a cap on bushels/oil sold like we do for military for this idea to work -- and that is another equally as radical change as the 2b bug removal

I'm always against the removal of the 2b bug because it allows players to dump their entire stockpile instantly, creating a very volatile bubble where the food market will crash as soon the someone starts destocking.

I've got the facebook functionality working properly -- I've been playing through facebook for about the last week :p

We're working on moving forward with the redesign of the in-game template to help cater better to new players.

Once this is done, we'll tighten it up and start the big push.

I'm very happy with how easily I was able to make facebook talk to the game and the game talk to Facebook. We're going to have a winner there, I am confident of that. We just need to get all our ducks in a row and be ready to expand the community :)

ya... this is uncool. I'm changing it back now. I'll write a code fix for it tonight, but i've been making other updates to the forums which I don't want to push live quite yet :-/

I think this is a good move, not so much as a way to help people with existing credit card debt, but more for people who currently don't have massive credit card debt but may in the future.

It creates a goal to strive for -- to meet or beat the estimate -- and it gives some people who do just make the minimum payments a wakeup call.

It's definitely a step in the right direction, but there are still many steps to be taken before America as a whole, or individuals across North America, are back on a path to fiscal responsibility.
