Okay so I am in the market for a new computer. I settled for a 400 Dollar Lenovo with a AMD A10 1TB HD and 8GB RAM Laptop. It is only to hold me off for the time being until I can get a more than decent workstation. I am not a PC Gamer, but I want something I can use to begin learning a lot of new programs, OS's and applications all at once. So something with great processing speed and able to handle multiple programs and apps open at the same time. Am I better off building my own and if so, which components are recommended. If there is a desktop on the market that is a good pre-build, can ppl give me some ideas of what brand names and specifications you currently use.

building your own desktop is fun, its not going to be much cheaper if you go for the cheapest parts though

building your own laptop is definately a niche thing, i wouldnt recommend that, buying something like you did is much more sensible

only need to be careful you dont buy something with horrible graphics if you like to game

all you need to leave multiple apps open is a lot of ram, and you can always buy more and add it in later as long as you have extra slots on your motherboard

some of the cheapest or smallest ones will only have 2 slots so if you start with 2x4 you cant upgrade but if you start with 1x8 you can but it will be a bit slower to begin, that sort of thing

i got c64 too and its those earlier models.

and yes build your own desktop.

intel core i7 4xxx boxed or 6xxxx boxed, 16 or 32 GB ram, MSI Z97I AC or Gigabyte Z170-HD3, if no need for gaming then mobo's integrated display adapter is fine and if gaming then radeon r9 3x0, if no gaming then 500 watt psu and if gaming then 600-750 watt psu, Fractal Design Define R4 as case.

I agree with Marshall on the Fractal Design R4 too, I built mine with one of those and its a beautiful case, quiet, stylish and you can add liquid cooling if you need it.

Don't those cases require a specific form for the motherboards or are these cases pretty universal?

I would recommend AMD processors for Desktop PCs unless you are doing heavy virtualization. The performance is comparable for about 40% the price.

No doubt Intel makes an incredible product but the price for some of their ultra-high processors is insane

Also I have seen Intel systems with around 1tb of ram take over 15mins to post.

Any proliant gen9 system is a perfect example.

no home user needs 1tb ram unless runs ALOT virtual machines at the same time and then needs mobo meant for servers since home mobos max support is 32gb.

Overclocked my i7 920 last night for the first time ever (owned since 2010ish).

Modest overclock for those of you who know about the c0/d0 issues that affect these chips.

I'm over 3ghz now (c0 worse of the two types).

I'm thinking about bumping to 3.3ghz and check for stability. For now, +333mhz x 4 cores over stock (2.67ghz) are decent gains.

That would be a very expensive home PC no doubt

Do you consider something like an hp z820 or z800 not a workstation? Cause you can put 8x32gb pieces of ram in them no problem

Im pretty sure my home pc can handle 256gb ram as well

The systems that I operate with 1tb of ram in them also have 4x nvidia k2 headless GRID cards in them. Each grid card has 8gb gddr5 ram and 2 gpu sockets with 4 cores each.

Each system can support over 30 CAD/CAM VMs each with their own 1gb gddr5 3d gpu hyper visor. It also helps to have dual fabric 8gbit backplane connected to a 10tb all SSD San that can do dynamic deduplication of storage at the block level to maximize storage capacity.

Yes I know how insanely expensive this sounds but it was double the price 2 years ago.

And yes you can play CS1 in high detail at 1920x1200 inside these VMs no problem.

SC2 is a bit choppy above medium detail

most computers these days use quick ram checks

it used to drastically slow down post putting more memory in

i guess if a server had a long enough up time it might make sense to use the slow one, but maybe you should use memtest or an equivalent in that case

very nice build. Right now, I'm trying to figure out if I can justify buying an H100 or H110, and how the hell i can fit a 220mm rad into my case.

Why the mini-itx motherboard? That's a hell of an HTPC if that's what you're using it for.
