Randy Rhoads!

For pure technical virtuosity, guys like Ron Jarzombek, Michael Romeo, Chris Broderick and John Petrucci are still making new music. I look at it like this. All 4 of those guys could play anything by the other artists mentioned, and I don't think the other artists could all play what those guys do.

Hendrix

Rhoads, Vaughn and Page were all excellent, but think Hendrix was absolute genius.

Do wish Rhoads had lived longer though, musically gifted and do not think he even came close to his potential.

I'd go with Paco de Lucia or Stanley Jordan.

I'd also include Yngwie Malmsteen, Al di Meola, Buckethead, Wes Montgomery, Steve Ray Vaughn, Joe Satriani, Steve Vai, and Andres Segovia for the rest of my top 10.

I grew up in st. louis so a quick hop across the river and I was in East St. Louis Illinois. the true blues center for the midwest. Got to meet albert, bb and freddy king. Ike turner, all are super great. Jimmi was awesome, and check out the cd called rainbow bridge, he had one heck of a buzz going on.
in 1972 was at the mar e sol festival in pureto rico, vega baja/bayamon area. 7 days of music, no food, no water, no clothes. On easter evening which was also a full moon, they flew in two heavy organs and the Allman brothers played. then as the sun was coming up BB King played for hours.
we had bob seeger and teddie nugent play in a cave for us south of st. louis, could not hear for 3 days.

But still my most favorite is Jeff Beck in his rarest cd, that few have heard
YOU HAD IT COMING nothing like it at all. feedback here after you have heard the songs, esp the one that uses a hot rod car exhaust and it blends!

allman brothers are a great deal of fun.. if you can't enjoy their music you must not enjoy music very much ;p
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jdnjyalA87Y
bb is amazing, but i would have *loved* to see seger in his prime (which i, not being alive, would guess was between the mid to late seventies, not so much so early as seventy two but of ocurse i very well may be mistaken (when was the hollywood nights album released?)

and yes, it would appear you and i are the only beck fans in the house, brujo :(

let me try to refocus this thread. if jimi, and some of the others mentioned above, had similar levels of virtuosity, and jimi dipped his bandana in acid, and then wrapped said bandana around his head, and then dropped a few more drops of acid directly in his eyes for good measure, who was the better guitarist?

quite literally jimi was seeing sounds (and this actually wasn't from the acid alone, he was born this way) and couple that with a flood load of very potent and clean acid, the likes of which simply are not produced today, jimi was a virtuoso of different levels. he was omnipotent.

jimi hendrix is the best.
a lot of the guitarists above can play a lot of complicated scales quickly, but did they flow with a band like jimi could? OF COURSE NOT. did they create truly transcendent sound? no.

jimi hendrix.

and bradey, allman bros was my first concert ever. they are awesome.
also in a similar level of awesomeness is govt mule and warren haynes - and specifically check out the last show I saw of them which was boston halloween in either 2008 or 2009. (just look for when govt mule played boston 10/31). second set surprise Dark side of the moon costume. warren haynes killed it. (a musical costume is a halloween show when a band [traditionally it was phish] plays a surprise cover set start to finish of a certain album of another band)

jimi hendrix is still the best though

richie havens, joan baez, robert zimmerman, and buddys from sha na na

oh, i'm sorry, i thought we'd started simply naming muscians who, in their career, have held guitars.

chords and scales are for people learning guitar, vic. off the top of my head jimis best guitar work is star spangled banner, what with acid and bandanas and stocks of wood, of course, and this i do not believe, as a black man, he would have been allowed to write.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fA51wyl-9IE

now, at the same time.. jimi dropped lsd knowing he'd play. havens played, opening, for like nine hours or something retarded like that, before somebody came off after him. could jimi have done something so impeccably well without ruining it with his acid induced lets all think i'm the greatest, mentality? i guess not.

also, for scott, black people don't know how to play guitar. lets be serious (the joke being that i am literally watching a dvd of a black man playing guitar)

clap your hands, clap your hands, clap your hands, clap your hands..

since drugs beside cords of wood while wearing bandanas makes you talented guitarists, lets go country joe?

I'd have to go with Stevie Ray Vaughn or Robin Trower myself. But that might be due to my age. Not that familiar with what's running around out there right now.

A showcase of Paco de Lucia's ability. Normally he plays flamenco, but he's playing classical in this song. It's not as technically impressive as his flamenco work, but his ability to use changes in dynamics or tempo here to add emotion is so incredible.
