FFA or Express are probably the two best servers to learn on, because with FFA you can play 16 countries, so you can have more opportunities to test strategies, or if you get killed, you have more countries to keep going with.
With Express, the turns are fast and furious, so you can learn a new strategy and take it from beginning to end of set in just a few days.
FFA probably edges out Express for new players though because here you can also join an alliance and have more access to mentors who can teach you the game. If you're looking for a clan/alliance, I'm sure there are plenty of people on the boards who would love to have another member. However, you will find that some people are suspicious of people with the "New Member" tag, because a lot of people cause problems, then make a new account and try to act like a new person in order to get into a clan that otherwise would turn them down.
Either way, if you act reasonable with people, ask questions when you don't understand something, and make a real attempt to learn the unwritten, political rules of the game, you'll earn trust and respect pretty quickly.
