I am sure there are.

I sure hope nobody from our community has been hurt. Has anyone heard anything from any of our japanese players?

I am not from Japan, but I do have relatives who are, and still live there. Most of my relatives there are from the Niigata, Nagano, Toyama and Ishikawa prefectures, which puts them on the Korean Sea side of the country, but I know I have a sister who lives in Tokyo.

I not only hope that none of my relatives were hurt. but also hope that no one else have been seriously hurt, although with an 8.9 magnitude quake the realization is there. One can only keep hope and keep a positive outlook.

no one seriously hurt? i mean I'm all for rosy outlooks and everything, but have you seen coverage of this? a good number of ppl have died in this. it will be well over 1000 when all is said and done.

I didn't want to come off insensitive or ignorant, but I don't really watch TV that often. not to mention the fact that the coax cable jack on mine is broken. I could have it fixed, but what with having a laundry list of things to buy, fix or replace already, it's just another hassle I don't want to deal with.

So, the only good thing my TV is for right now, is watching DVD or Blu-Ray movies, and playing my PS3. AS far as the details of the earthquake, I have been watching BBC and other news reports online.

While over 1,000 deaths is bad, it's pretty small compared to some other quakes that have had similar magnitudes.

there have only been 5 in recorded history with "similar magnitudes"

only reason tens of thousands arnt dead is because japan had prepared for this EXACT event.

Well, when you live near areas known for earthquakes, you learn to prepare for them, the worst I've ever been through was maybe a 6.

Wow. That reactor is leaking radioactive materials and they've distributed Iodine to the locals. They claim the reactor vessel is intact but had to pump seawater in to cool it.

reactor #3's emergency cooling system failed a little while ago - hope they are able to cool it down before it pops like the other did (or worse) :(

While this is extremely sad and unfortunate, Could you imagine what it would have been like in ant place other tham Japan? The death toll would have been horrendous.

I don't know. California, Washington, Iran, India, Turkey; any of them would have catastrophic damage. And those locations are just ones off the top of my head that have had some real bad ones, or would be just colossally catastrophic if one of that magnitude happened in any of those locations.

if a 8.9 hits LA

there would be 10's of 1000's dead

According to Dateline NBC tonight. They claim California's fault can produce an earthquake at a max of 8.0.

They did mention Washington, or off the coast of Washington as being able to produce an earthquake in the 9.0+ range with close to identical tsunami size of 30-40m.

They did not mention Iran, India or Turkey. But they also did not mention Alaska. I remember reading about a big earthquake in Alaska when I was in School. I don't know what kind of magnitude it was, but I believe it was pretty significant.

1/26/1700 there apparently was an earthquake in california they believe to have been 9.0, says a website for california, wiki says its the cascadia one you are talking about.

either way, same thing lol

but alaska has a fair amount of very strong eathquakes in the 8-9+ range
