What is going through someone's head when they spy on a country that is clearly playing a specialized strategy with high tech levels and very high CS and then decide to land grab that country anyways?

It's a special kind of stupid!

Especially when there are a lot of much better targets at this stage in the round, like rainbows or those without tech or without specialization, versus a guaranteed retaliation later on from an experienced player.

Thank you for coming to my Ted talk

People do it early set all the time. Half the top players in the game get an early landgrab or two. A few sets ago I got into a war (and won) with another top 10 player, who ROR'd because he wouldn't accept a retal for a hit on me early in the set, citing some 72 hour rule BS. fluff, this is primary, I can retal whenever the hell I want.

Exactly, thats why it's best to not grab countries that look promising!

I might have to try a tech start next round, I've been hit 5 or 6 times already and it's getting annoying

If any of the countries that hit me turn out to be good players I'll wait a month and retal their 200 acre grab for 2-3k acres or more

I've got a lot more than 200k turrets, but that is beside the point

The point is that there is more to consider than just a countries defenses in Primary server

Choosing to attack a country with a proper build, proper tech and high cs is a really stupid play when the round is two months long, especially when they could attack someone with a rainbow style build or someone with much lower tech levels

You are right ofc. But the problem is that you are assuming everyone else should act rationally. If they were all rational there would be far fewer to grab safely in primary.

One error people make is building a crap rainbow that has no growth potential. Another error other players can make is hit the wrong targets. I don't think that telling them works, just as telling the rainbows not to rainbow doesn't work.
I dont think retalling them works, except to get your land back. It will be just like assuming the rainbow player will learn to specialize over time just by seeing themselves fail at the game. It's not going to happen, sadly.

People are not rational so these hits will always happen, you can perhaps make it less likely to be the target of such, or make sure you lose less/benefit more from it. That's more or less your choices. :/

Are you willing to buy 1 million jets to retal me for a 200 acre grab? You can make that back plucking some low hanging fruit. Sure I'm taking a risk, but you have to change your play to retal, or just accept and grab someone within range. That's why jet heavy 70/30 countries don't get hit nearly as much as 30/70 or even 50/50 defense. I think greed has more to do with it. I have a proper build, but I've been grabbed by both rainbows and specialists this round.

Another angle of this is all the most experienced players go to forums at the start of each set to request alliances. So the most prolific hitters know who is who and subsequently the easiest to hit. See TwoPodRays post earlier in the thread.

Thanks Gerdler, those are excellent points!

g0nz0 to answer your question, yes I am willing to buy 10 million jets or even 20 million jets to retal a 100 acre grab. I can always resell the jets after they come back from their planned strike if I need too.

I'll typically retal every single grab, but last set I actually had more fun just threatening a retal and then watching that player destroy their own finish by running extremely high on turrets and high on expenses.

prefer not to let anyone know which country is mine until much later in the reset, just because someone out there might want to hit me because of actions I have taken in the past, or because they don't like my posts or my points of view.

Anyhow, regardless of the hits taken I am in a much stronger position now than I was at this point last round, so I am hoping for a good finish

Good luck everyone!

This is my third round of Primary, I started in Express first but I couldn't really understand how the bots diminishing returns works or keep up with the fast pace of the turns. I also played in tournament and I think it was my 2nd or 3rd round of Tourney when I started playing Primary.

I don't even remember what my handle was back in the 1990's when I was in high school and played Earth 2025 religiously and ran about 30 or 40 countries per round, it would have likely been Tec9, Tech9 or TechN9ne, great old gamer names, also a great gun and a pretty decent rapper

Interesting thread you posted above, thanks for that

I'll attempt to answer your questions

For tournament: I usually do a quick tech start on 3800 to 4000 acres with 220-240 cs and then convert to my main strategy

For Primary: The top players here do not typically do a tech start (with the odd exception), instead they go straight to their strategy and purchase tech as they go

How much tech you get before you convert will likely depend on which strategy you're picking and what the tech market activity is like for that particular round. In tournament last round I played a tech start casher and I got 150k tech points (all bus/res) before I switched

Your BPT will depend on your land goal, for example in Tourney I usually go for a 60-70 bpt, whereas in Primary I currently have a 110 bpt

Good luck!

Good luck!

Thank you that’s exactly what I needed to know. People said the tourney server has high tech prices a lot so I figured I would tech start over there.

Don't piss in my sand box, mmkayyy... thanks

Are you cashing or teching?

Tech

Hmmm I may be teching as well, we’ll see. I may convert to casher or I may go All X and keep teching.

Comparing primary to tournament tech start

I haven’t had any issues making top 10 with a hastily run tech start and it didn’t take me as long as cash starts or whatever. That was a while back but I found if I could grab really aggressive to make up for the lost time it worked out well. Pretty sure I watched serp and geta beat me doing that so I tried it. Worked well enough for me.
