How many countries restrict ex-cons voting rights? Most are even allowed to vote from prison, for example in Finland, Israel, Canada etc. In Germany loss of voting rights can be part of a sentence for certain political crimes but not the small stuff like murder.

Not technically always true in the US. There are felons that cannot vote. In 21 states, what you are saying is true, except they have to pay to get that restored. In 11 states they lose those rights or other rights and need a governor's pardon or other action to get them back.

It's all a patchwork of different ethical, religious as well as scientific considerations that contradict one another and different states/countries place different weight on them.

Either way you do it I think we should all agree it's not an interesting topic in a debate nor is it something that people who are not qualified either by profession, education, experience or a combination thereof should actually have a say about.
