my eleven year old playstation 3 sounds not unlike a small motor straining against a heavy load.
i am told it is the heatsink.

so i freeze water bottles and place them atop, it helps minimally. i freeze a tray of ice cubs, suspend the unit itself with empty cigarette packs and place the tray underneath. this does a better job than the bottles on top.

not to make the piece of fluff work any better, but because i question things i don't understand, but at what temperature does the tray of [melted ice so now water] at what temperature does the warm(ed)(ing) water equal the basic air for heat tranferring?

i know you need to know the temperature of the air, and my thermostat reads 73 F for the house.

just pour ice water directly into the playstation should fix it np...

about 1.5-3F below the temperature of the PS3... If the water can act as a heat sink.. somehow I doubt that. It is more likely that the ice/water cools the air that goes into the PS3 which means that the water will always help as long as it stays below 73 F. Which it will as long as there is water because of evaporation, unless ofcourse it is directly heated by the PS3 in which case it will help even if the temperature rises above 73 F.

Problem is if the tray obstucts the airflow in any capacity it will have a negative impact way sooner.

buy a portable A/C unit and connect a direct vent to it with a flexitube and some duct tape.

Silly question, but have you cleaned out the air intake? Just use a vacuum cleaner and suck all of the dust out of the plastic screens. If you are brave you can also remove the cover and vacuum the interior to.
