in the saying, hope against hope..

i know the meaning, to hope with little chance of anything actually coming to fruition, but in the sentence, "to hope against hope"..

i am hoping against which- or what- hope?..

so like prayer against a prayer, or hail mary against a hail mary..

a long shot at what itself is a long shot.. like doubling down on how improbable it might be?..

or i hope i don't lose.. so my hope is i don't lose.. but now hoping against that hope suggests i want to lose.. ?
