That is mostly due to real estate, which is demand driven and also relates to California's market not bottoming out to the same degree as many other regions of the US.

It is hard to argue that an economically depressed area is more prosperous because goods (and more specifically real estate) are cheaper.

it's also due to the fact that california has the 9th largest GDP ... IN THE WORLD.
the state is so damn large there are huge disparities of wealth between the coastal and inland communities. i'd image cost of living in some of the coastal communities is somewhere in the top 5 in the nation, and inland it's toward the cheapest in the nation. avgs toward 29
