can MARTIAN replace the originator of this thread with Croaker, replace the title with "The Four Sweetest Words in English", and the content read Pitchers and catchers report?

i mean, if we can't rely on tradition, is it truly baseball??

(since i was like thirteen i've adopted this as, in fact, the four sweetest words in the english language).. (then i learned the joys of 'play it again, sam'..)

Things that need to be fixed.

-Batters stepping out after every pitch to adjust their gear.
-Pitchers walking around the mound and taking forever
-Ump not giving Time whenever it is asked for.

This game needs to be sped up, needs to be done in 2-2 1/2 hours. 4 Hour games are stupid crazy.

The new rules are only fines for offenders, of about 500 bucks. This won't do much to change the game right away, MLB is fluff footing around.

Expecting immediate and comprehensive change in a game as traditionally focused as baseball is going to net you dissapointment.

Hitters must keep at least one foot inside the batter's box at all times, barring exceptions like foul balls, wild pitches, or if the umpire grants him time out.

Pitchers must throw a pitch within 20 seconds of receiving the ball. Clocks posted in each dugout will count down the 20 seconds.

There will be a maximum break between innings of 2:05, with a clock keeping track. Hitters must be in the batter's box by 1:45. If the hitter's not ready, the umpire can call a strike. If the pitcher doesn't throw a pitch by 2:05, the umpire can call a ball.

Teams will have a maximum of 2:30 to change pitchers, with the clock starting as soon as the reliever enters the playing field.

Teams are limited to a maximum of three mound visits per game, not including pitching changes. This applies to trips to the mound by managers, coaches, and catchers.

Pitchers no longer have to deliver four balls for an intentional walk. The manager can simply signal to the umpire.

But I don't know what more you want than that. Yes the fine may be $500, but that isn't the point. It is to change the habits of habitual offenders. Your instant satisfaction bullfluff has no reasonable place here.

I'd prefer that there be stiffer penalties to actually change the behavior. Imagine if NFL imposed a no hitting the QB in the head rule, but only fined you $500 each hit and did not give you any kind of in game penalty for it?

Auto- Balls and Strikes for offenses would be a step in the right direction. Stepping out of the batters box and getting an automatic strike, that would cause you to think twice. A pitcher getting an auto Ball for wasting time...

You think that $500 isn't much but when viewer in a larger scope, it will add up fast for habitual offenders. This is also a first implementation of new rules and instead of a trial period you want an iron fist that can effect more than the offenders. This is baseball bro, not Nazi Germany. It takes time to change habits ingrained into a game. Instead of applauding for a move in the right direction you sit there and fluff that it wasn't a big enough of a move. Makes me think you don't know how ingrained ed in tradition baseball is. This is a large move. Your hitting the QB analogy just proves my point. Apples and oranges.

Not just that, it is a step in the right direction. There is no real preseason to test new rules so this is how they go about it. For all we know these rules won't do anything measurable in regards to game tempo. If that turns out to be true then it is now an asterisk season.

Baseball is traditional as fluff, but they are making an effort to modernize and fit I to TV contracts and demands. Give them time. Hell, they even allowed instant replay!

Apples and Oranges. The players hitting the QB in the head may have a motivation to do so--it helps their team, and it might help them financially because they'll be seen as a better defensive player.

Standing outside the batter's box for 10 extra seconds doesn't inherently do anything to the pitcher (it could mess with his rhythm theoretically, but it's not an automatic), and they're certainly not going to get paid more because of those extra 10 seconds.

ford's right. It's a game without a clock, so there are potentially problems with timing, especially the more they commercialize the game (which, along with the La Russa style bullpen management, I would argue is a way bigger problem than a batter stepping out).

If the timing of the game is why you hate baseball, you probably weren't going to like it if the game were 10-15 minutes shorter anyway.

Considering the new rules, what would be the most probable outcome of a baseball game?

The average points scored / game going up or down ? ( taking into acount the 20 seconds rule we should have higher score-line ).

It isn't changing the number of plays directly. It might effect stamina but other than that it would be hard to predict any scoring effect. Same number of outs to get

i know correlation does not imply causation, but when i first saw this graph i figured that we'd see scoring go up as games get shorter. my reasoning is that the timing rules will affect pitchers more than batters because it could slightly mess with a pitchers' long established mound routine, as well as potentially not giving the pitcher as much rest between pitches.

but after thinking about this more - there are two issues with this graph

first and foremost the chart only goes back a decade... it'd be nice to see a graph reaching farther back with notations of when rule changes occurred that might've affected game time

also, it was in 2007 that MLB banned amphetamines. i know i will never be able to back this up, but i feel 100% confident in saying that the banning of amphetamines has had more of an impact on runs scored per game than the length of ballgames.

so in summation. i have no idea what this change will do to the runs scored

combine that runs/time over the past years with home runs. seems to be some similarities there.

personally I'd love it if this leads to longer ABs and longer games in general.

reaction time is the difference between a ball in the glove and a ball inside your eye socket, so catching is very important for a pitcher ;)
