just sulk it up and buy newer phone, i think even lumia 5x0 is better than iphone 3gs.

there is absolutely zero value in repairing a phone that old, IMO.

it'll cost 3x what it's worth for the repair; probably $200-250 for new glass + installation. That's a significant chunk of a new iPhone off contract and definitely enough to get like a 4S or put a pretty big dent in one of the 5 series.

If you think you can replace it yourself, which they're not that bad to do, you can buy the lcd, digitizer and tool kit for around 40 bucks.

I've even got them cheaper than that before.

You can buy a new 3g phone for probably $50 dollars to be honest with you not worth repairing it that's such an old phone.

can the screens be switched easily? perhaps buy a duplicate clunker and just switch the screen out?

the glass is pretty simple to change out. and like danzig said they are super cheap. IF you do it yourself. but if you pay someone else then yeah its not worth fixing. ive had to change the screen on my ipad(pain in the ass) but worth it. you can probably find youtube videos with step by step instructions to fix it.

tl;dr version: If you're in Canada and are currently on an older data contract that's about to expire - DO NOT JUMP INTO A HARDWARE UPGRADE. You end up giving up so much and/or paying a lot more in the long run than just buying your phone up front and continuing month-to-month.

I can't speak for the States, but in Canada hardware upgrades are almost never a good deal. Yes you don't pay up front for the phone, but trust me you pay for it throughout the term of the contract.

Many providers have a bring your own device (BYOD) discount and nobody will let you renew an old grandfathered plan and upgrade your phone. A buddy of mine was so excited to get a new HTC One M8 for free he signed a new 2 year, $80 contract with 2GB of data. He was previously month to month on a $55 6GB plan. Over 24 months, the cash alone works out to $576. The One M8 could've been purchase outright for $699. So he's basically giving up 4GB monthly of data in exchange for what works out to just over $5/mo savings. He says that he rarely goes over 2GB now, but from time to time he does (hello overage chargers) and maybe in the future he might need to. To get those same 6GB now that he previously had for $55 he'd be paying over $120 a month. Just so he can save $5/mo and get the phone for "free."

These providers aren't stupid. Nothing is free. They get their money one way or another. Buy your phone outright and hold onto your old grandfathered data plans.

Between options like the One Plus One and the Nexus 5 and the Moto X you don't need to spend almost a grand on a cutting edge phone.

Had my buddy gotten the Nexus 5 for example, he would've paid $400 for the 32GB model and saved the extra $25/mo by staying month to month. He would have had a very capable phone, 3 times the data, and saved $176 over the next 2 years compared to what he did.

The phone probably isn't worth repairing, but it definitely wouldn't be anywhere near $250-$300 to get it fixed.
The front glass (digitizer) can be purchased for about $15 from eBay. It's not an easy fix, but it's not impossible either.

If you take your time, and have a set of small or jeweler's screwdrivers, you can get it accomplished in less than 2 hours (and that's overestimating).

I'm betting a repair shop would charge less than $100 to fix it.

ALways remember that if you have a warranty on the phone, once you buy a component and replace it yourself, you have than voided the warranty. You may have coverage through asurion. Check with your cell phone provider.
