The defender held against your forces, causing them to retreat!

shouldn't that mean you get it back?

"missile" is frequently used as a euphemism here. Therefore it is psychologically damaging to the majority of players (high testosterone males) to give them a message that their "missile" was "destroyed". They are more likely to accept a Defense Held and "retreat".

The current vocabulary is clearly carefully crafted to minimize player loss.
