First note from my company's IT group yesterday:

Stop using Internet Explorer as your browser till there is an update from Microsoft. There is a bug that could may allow a hacker to take control of your computer. As soon as I hear there is a fix I will let you know.

Check out this article from USA TODAY:

Homeland Security: Don't use IE due to bug

http://usat.ly/1m3LwbM

Followed this morning by:

All,

An FYI about this bug. It will not be fixed in XP due to it being end of life. If you are running XP at home you should consider upgrading as this bug count will continue to increase.

This is the first of many zero-day attacks and vulnerabilities that will never be fixed for Windows XP users. Microsoft last month shipped its final set of updates for XP. Unfortunately, many of the exploit mitigation techniques that EMET brings do not work in XP.

Yesterday on a clean install in a VM of XP sp2, IE6 crashed upon first opening before appearing.

I'm not sure how ppl can still use IE6 because even MS sites dont work correctly.

Unfortunately most of that 50% is business users with uneducated old school IT managers, which live in the Microsoft branded prison they built for themselves along with the rest of their company. These are the same guys that stuck with Windows 2000 and continued to put money into infrastructure based on it long after XP came out, let XP end of life come before being upgraded to Windows 7(or worse yet upgraded to windows8 and didn't even bother with 8.1), and some of the old timers probably did the same thing between NT4 and Win2k.

They lock down their users to the point of insanity all the while slacking on updates in the name of ensuring they don't cause problems first. Update testing consists of install update on machine, play solitary and minesweeper for a week. They force use of IE because it is "secure" while being the most insecure browser. They force use of antique operating systems and deprecated software packages in the name of stability and cost considerations while paying double the staff to go around switch out computers and fix them, hiring outside software developers to reverse engineer and fix broken software, and paying old school thinking consultants to tell them the same fluff their IT managers already think because it's what they want to hear.

Many of these companies/entities have your credit card information or worse yet have access to government information about you. Your bank probably is in this list too, but they already have your money.

This is an adult scary story you can tell around the campfire.

I work with the military.

Guess which browser is the only one authorized on our machines.
And, Monsters, do not forget to specify, when time and place shall serve, that I am an ass.
