OK! SOME OF YOU WILL PROBABLY THINK THAT I SHOULD BE ASKING A DOCTOR THIS. HOWEVER! I DO NOT TRUST THOSE FLIM-FLAM ARTISTS IN THEIR FANCY WHITE JACKETS. SO I AM GOING TO ASK YOU SIMPLETONS INSTEAD!

IS IT POSSIBLE FOR ONE TO BE ALLERGIC TO ONE'S OWN IMMUNE SYSTEM?

BACKGROUND: ABOUT 7 OR 8 YEARS AGO, I BEGAN TO NOTICE THAT EVERY TIME I GOT A REALLY NASTY COLD OR BECAME EXTREMELY FATIGUED (LIKE GOING 24+ HOURS WITHOUT SLEEP) I WOULD GET MARBLE-SIZED TO GOLF-BALL-SIZED LUMPS ON THE BACK OF MY HEAD. THEY'D BE QUITE ITCHY, BUT WOULD GO AWAY AFTER A FEW HOURS.

THEN TWO THANKSGIVINGS AGO, I GOT THEM AGAIN. HOWEVER, THIS TIME THEY WERE NOT LIMITED TO JUST THE BACK OF MY HEAD. I ALSO HAD ONE ON MY TORSO WHICH LOOKED LIKE WHAT I THOUGHT MAYBE RINGWORM LOOKS LIKE. SO, AGAINST MY BETTER JUDGEMENT, I WENT TO THE DOCTOR'S OFFICE.

SHE DIAGNOSED THE WELTS AS BEING AN ALLERGIC REACTION, AND ASKED ME IF I'D BEEN TAKING ANY MEDICINE. THE DAY BEFORE, I HAD TAKEN NYQUIL, SO THE DOCTOR BECAME CONVINCED THAT I'M ALLERGIC TO SOME INGREDIENT IN NYQUIL. SHE TOLD ME TO TAKE BENADRYL (WHICH REALLY SCREWED UP MY THANKSGIVING DAY DRINKING PLANS), GAVE ME A PRESCRIPTION FOR AN EPI-PEN, AND SENT ME ON MY WAY.

I HAVE SINCE DETERMINED THAT SHE WAS AN IDIOT.

THESE WELTS APPEAR WHETHER I TAKE COLD MEDICINE OR NOT, NO MATTER WHAT I EAT, EVEN IF I DON'T EAT. I CAN *MAKE* THEM APPEAR SIMPLY BY DEPRIVING MYSELF OF SLEEP FOR 24 HOURS, AND I KNOW THAT THEY WILL SHOW UP EVERY TIME I HAVE A REALLY CRAPPY COLD LIKE THE ONE I HAVE RIGHT NOW. THIS TIME MY IMMUNE SYSTEM ALLERGY HAS MANIFESTED ITSELF IN VERY IRRITATING WAYS. A 6-INCH LONG WELT RIGHT WHERE MY BELT RUBS AGAINST IT, AND EXTREMELY ITCHY WELTS ON THE PALM OF EACH HAND. IT IS MADDENING.

I HAVE GOOGLED THIS MANY TIMES, AND HAVE NEVER BEEN ABLE TO FIND ANY INFORMATION ON IT.

I NOW SUBMIT IT TO YOU NUMBSKULLS.

HA!

After much deliberation, and many viewings of house, one of those bastards in diagnostics would jump to autoimmune with that info.

disclaimer: not a doctor, but I watch them on tv

LaF doctor diagnoses for LaF members!

JOIN LAF!

I would tell you to just get more sleep, and wear a jacket so you don't get a cold, fixes all the problem.

I'D SUGGEST WEBMD.. BUT TAKE INTO ACCOUNT MY PREVIOUS THREE ILLNESSES HAVE BEEN IN DESCENDING ORDER, LUPUS; WALKING PNEUMONIA; TYPHUS..

BUT I SHOULD DECLARE THE TYPHUS WAS AN INCORRECT DIAGNOSIS OF WHAT HAD PREVIOUSLY BEEN WALKING PNEUMONIA.. ON AN UNRELATED NOTE, DOES ANYBODY WANT TO ENJOY A NICE EVENING WALK??

yeah h347 is a ENT doc....he is pretty knowledgeable outside his speciality. He pretty much knew what could be causing all my miscarriages before my specialists did. He was correct.

Sam....what about Shingles?

do they appear every time you force yourself not to sleep?

do they appear EVERY time you catch a cold? what is a cold to you? what are the cold symptoms that you have in common every time they do appear?

i dont think id say you have an allergy to a medication, but it definitely sounds like an allergic reaction based on your symptoms you've described (if you're more descriptive it could become easier to figure out).

the fact that it manifests at a different location is interesting. its possible, if you hve an immune reaction, you are activating mast cells somehow. how you would be doing it im uncertain. could be something in your body is normally surpressed, but stress (fatigue) can allow it to come out which activates other parts of immunity.

heat is further in medical training than i am so he may have a better idea.

The most reasonable reason is that he is allergic to explosions

but bad in the good way, yes?

medicine is like drinking or like sex, if you don't regret it afterwards you're doing it wrong, no?

You probably have an underlying condition that presents itself only when your body is in a stressed state. Your description of the 'back of your head'/'torso' is wanting. You should be fired as the director of whatever it is.

Go see a better doctor I guess.

FYI, have you lived in the same place the past 8 years? It could be environmental. Shower daily? It could be bad hygienes. Does it happen only during the cold season? As you can see, lots of questions.

MY FIRST GUESS WOULD BE SOME HIDEOUS SEXUALLY TRANSMITTED DISEASE, BUT OBVIOUSLY THAT IS HIGHLY UNLIKELY TO OCCUR WITH SAM. AS SUCH, I AM SUBMITTING ALIEN LARVAL INFESTATION AS OUR TEAM GUESS ANSWER.

My son had something similar when he was young, and they never did figure out what caused it.

He would start with a red welt on his face, head, or neck and then it would grow and move down his body. Lucky for him, it would stop just below his waist, and then jump to his legs, missing his private area.

Red, itchy welts would appear when he was stressed about something, or not feeling well. We took him to specialists and allergy doctors but they found nothing.

He eventually grew out of it when he entered his teens.

I am allergic to myself, not totally right description, but if I get sweat and there is no possibilty to get shower within reasonable time, I get itchy eczema to various places.

So my anwer is that it is possible.

Keep yourself clean and use cream which includes cortisone, that works for me.
