$5 says they are back to do mineral research. I suspect it's related to Helium-3, which is theorized to be the primary input for potential fusion reactors of the future, and there's a lot of it on the moon but not much on Earth.

IMO, the US should be sending more robots back -- if not just as a proving ground for more robust Mars missions -- but manned missions to the moon that don't include setting up bases sound like a waste of time & resources.
