my question that i ask eveyrone with twitter who isn't a celebrity:

is why the hell do you (best friend/earth empires) need a twitter? who the heck would follow some random kid's tweets from southwestern VA? who would follow the tweets from an text based online game? what would you posts? announcements? there's a forum for that.

i know you guys are trying to jazz this game up, but time's better spent 1) building a better boxcar/fixing boxcar or 2) implementing facebook

Twitter is what YOU make of it. You choose to follow BS, you get BS. Don't bash twitter because you still use it as a man-child would.
I say this, fully realizing that some of you probably have yet to understand that a computer is more than a pron machine.

But yeah what bertz said.. i can see a twitter feed giving end of set warnings helpful especially on the single player servers. And if it could be personalized to my account, that turn overflow warning would be a welcome return.

1) i don't use twitter. much less in the way that a man-child would.
2) if the 'RESET ENDS IN 48.2 HOURS' isn't a big enough warning, then you're probably not into earth enough to sign up for fluffter
3) we used to have turn overflow emails. only twits have flufftter, but everyone has email... why not use that again?

updates/addons to the game are great, but this would just be a poor use of resources IMHO

"not into earth enough" yeah you are right, i don't live here. I have a real life. But i've been playing since 1997 and have some decent stats on the leaderboards. What you may consider "enough" may not be my ideal. Should i leave the game because i'm not logged in as much as you?

The twit nerve comment was cute. You go on following the Kardashians and i'll stay happy and informed following the scientific research feeds relevant to my career on twitter.

You can use Facebook for relaying the same information but the audience is more receptive due to the social nature of it. The existing EE group on Facebook is under utilized.

SoF has been using it's Facebook group successfully for the few sets with 180 past and present SoFers in the group.

Um.....it's not a matter of LIVING EE....it is a matter of logging into your country once in the last 72 hours to know how many hours are left in the game. I don't have a life, but even if I did I would probably log in at least once every 72 hours.

What is beneficial for one doesn't make it beneficial for all. I can get the same information from RSS feeds (for your argument) instead of signing up for something as useless as twitter.

I'll concede that maybe a twitter feed for most EE players is of little use but if you have hundreds of millions of bushels to destock, the end of set warning at 72 hours is a little bit of worthless too.

I'm always aware of the EOS for Alliance server. But I do enjoy the Primary server from time to time. When I start a set in Primary I have no idea what my time constraints will be a month into the set, all I know for sure is that my Alliance game will always take precedence.

I would find it difficult to believe that mine is a unique situation in that regard.

So yeah there are days I miss logging into the Primary. There are times my turns overflow there. There are times I login for two minutes from my phone just to cash down some turns and hope for more time the next day. And there are sets when i log in and am surprised to find there are only 40 hours left in the set and I'm sitting on a few hundred million bushels. Maybe an ingame daily countdown starting at midset would help.

But this thread was asking for ideas for twitter and a bunch of you responded like frickin' neanderthals having already given up on trying to figure out the uses for a frickin' wheel.

Twitter IS what you make of it, just as Facebook is. For me, twitter has much higher value than FB, outside of 'social networking'. It seems that many of you have no clue how it can and is used in an adult manner. Are you all still 16 years old?

This scenario does make sense. Life DOES get busy. If it helps you, then by all means let the twitterers do it. I personally won't be signing up for twitter for this reason as I try to stay aware of the games end date.

ZEN i posted because i saw twitter getting bashed here in response to a serious request by a Game Moderator. Look upthread! It was obvious from the replies that most people bashing it haven't a clue.

If you doubt twitter has uses other than Hollywood Tonight type crap, just do a simple google search for 'twitter for academia' or 'twitter for science' or 'twitter for business' or get specific like 'twitter for metallurgy' and you'll see it has serious uses and is a powerful tool if you stop looking at it as if it's nothing but a toy.

Really, except for a couple of serious responses, the crowd here was doing what it always does. It really does look like some of you grown men are still waiting to see female genitalia for the first time outside of a computer monitor.

If you're not whining at each other for thread upon thread over this or that grudge you're trying to hunt down yet another picture of boobs or butt.

There's very little 'adult' here other than 'wannabe adult xxx' and I am, more than ever in the past 15 years, ashamed to show this game to my contemporaries for fear they'll come to AT and see this drivel.

But of course, I suppose I shouldn't expect a bunch of teenage boys to understand what I mean when I tell them they are acting like children. At least my teenage grandson is maturing out of that phase.

Micro blogging is helpful if you want to give information to those retired players.

Example, if a player used to play in Rage and see this tweet:

I don't know if that would be the case but there's no harm in trying. If we want to help this game grow, we should try all things that could possible make this game grow.

That's assuming the x-player has a twitter account and is following EE.
I have found twitter very helpful in RL. More than any other web tool, it has much power if needed and a person knows how to use it.

I personally don't think EE should use Twitter as a tool to display end of set dates or war decs. I do think it can be used for posting upcoming development ideas, but that is about it. Rarely anyone would use it. Adding an overflow to twitter? Seems like it could require a bit more work than the facebook app :P

Also cyref, you may have a point, though you went at it the wrong way. Calling people out on maturity levels, and what they look at on the internet shouldn't be any of your business really. This game doesn't tell you when you sign up that you have to be mature to play. That is what this is, a "game".

I hear you Mr Emerald but first off i don't give a flying pickle what you look at on the internet just realize that there's no reason to run around in public talking about what you saw there. ALL THE TIME.

How this community griefs me about what I have to say might have dissuaded me before but dammit I just about quit this game last set and I may leave after another set anyway so i am just going to say my piece. A little over two years ago I thought it would be fun to get my then nearly 14 year old grandson into the game.
He's a math whiz and watching me play the game when he was at my house caught his attention. It was different than the usual games he's been around and to be honest I was really hyped that it would be a way to interact with him maybe even on a daily basis. Something we could both be involved in even when miles apart.

I was playing on Alliance and Team regularly at the time. My alliance was really good about our forums content and i had no worries that my grandson would be in a good environment.

That didn't work out.
His Mom (my daughter) saw some offensive country names on the servers and would not allow him to play. Back then i thought the names were pretty mild and really, my daughter is not a prude.
But there is some backstory. My grandson has a little sister, two years younger. She was assaulted when she was ten. She still suffers from that experience and perhaps always will. We all will.

I'm no prude either. But having had that happen to my granddaughter at such a young age opened my eyes just a bit to a subject I certainly had been aware of before but only from afar. That Event made me think of all the crap a young girl or even adult women have to deal with on a daily basis. The innuendo, the unwelcome and often graphic advances and slurs. Uncool jokes that I, too, had participated in for much of my life. You might say that out of respect for my granddaughter, i made the effort to see the world from a woman's point of view.

Children, adolescents, can't be 'protected' from everything. That's a given. But the 'grown man' that assaulted my granddaughter saw sexual jokes in everything. He had a reputation that my daughter was unaware of when she moved into her new neighborhood. A couple of neighbors eventually told her about this guy's sleazy behavior when he got drunk but what happened was pretty much unavoidable. You can't keep a child locked up in the house or on a leash. Maybe this happened to my granddaughter because this POS was never directly confronted in the past, or people just put up with his fluff, or laughed along with him. They thought it was raunchy, but generally innocent, fun.
Look around these boards. Look at the country names. That happens all the time here.

So a couple years have passed. my grandson recently turned sixteen. Can he play this game yet? He wanted to. So again my daughter looks at the country names on different servers yesterday.. she emailed to me a few that she found.. Martian fluffs Sheep. oh haha funny - oops can i not say that here? why not? it IS a country name. fluffagion? Lovely.

Yeah i know, nothing a 16 yr old hasn't seen/heard in high school. My daughter is trying to be a good parent. She has the right to prevent that stuff from entering her home. But think about it.. these are ADULTS making those country names. An entire group - mostly grown men - took over the Team Server 6 or 8 months ago with the noble name of Team Sex Offenders.

Hey it's not just the people here that do this. It's everywhere. Isn't it rather amazing that here we are well into the 21st century and so many guys are still treating women like fluff? What is WRONG with you? Are you afraid that if you don't wag your junk at every passing female someone will think you're gay? Are you really that dense?

All i'm saying is take a quiet moment to look at your behavior and be your own judge of character. Don't wait until someone like me can't take it anymore and goes on a rant.. be an adult, identify and clean up your own mess that's in your head.

Cyref - Anyone who takes advantage of a child sexually should be beaten to death. Male/Female child....it doesn't matter. I am truly sorry that something like that has happened in your family and I don't approve of it at all.

But please don't compare real life events to message board personas.....a lot of us have to be very serious in real life and some times this is a good outlet to be jesters. I have played this game since 96 and most of the people here know that I am often never serious. In fact, this MIGHT be the most serious you'll see me.

I am a typical male. I say things in RL just as bad as I say on here. My wife has a sense of humor and knows that she more or less owns me (State of California says HALF, but we all know it's more like 99%)....

I can understand that you have a jaded view of us (who could blame you)....but in no way does this reverse my opinion about Twitter and its use for me personally. Lastly, the internet is a cesspool and this little community is saintly in comparison. There is going to be a lot of censorship in your grandson's future, but at least this is a community that attempts to be PC. If you see an offensive country name you CAN report it.

EarthEmpires has always had a twitter feed. Some people use it, and we are using it to publicly recruit and put out information out there. I will close this thread now since it turned into a flame fest.
