Don't get me wrong. I LOVE the South. My mother-in-law is a typically gracious Southern woman who is the perfect example of what the South has that no other place on the planet.
She is the perfect hostess, a great cook, keeps an immaculate house and has raised kids as well as having a professional career prior to her retirement. If you go to or live in the "real South", you know exactly what I mean.
Anyone who hasn't experienced real Southern America Culture can't understand how a person might drop the N-Bomb in casual conversation simply as a way to identify a person like they might say "that bald guy" as a descriptive term.
Years ago, I worked with an older fellow from Bayou La Batre, Alabama. He used to tell us stories about growing up there and quite often he used the N Word to describe the older gentlemen he learned a lot of things from. While I wouldn't call it a "term of endearment", he spoke of these men with great respect.
The rest of the country and probably the rest of the world doesn't understand WHY folks might have pitched a fit because there was a court action to remove the "racist flag" (the Civil War battle flag of the South) from flying atop the Capitol Building in South Carolina may years ago.
