IMO, "equivalent of 12m turrets in each country" is crap. You have what... at least 50k acres average, right? (very rough estimation since it's ffa).
And mike, some of those countries actually have zero turrets... Won't say who and in what tag though :)
That's how people can stock steal easily and go what bigwiggie call "snowballing effect"
Defence won't stop suiciders from hitting you. That you should know - but it WILL lessen the damage done to you. People hitting with say... 30m jet SS, 5m jet SS ,15m jet SS a hit a hit makes a huge difference. Oil and jet market might stop him, military losses, readiness, expenses, etc. Too many people think they'll get away with 1 jet SS or even 10m jet SS.
In alliance - where you should be relatively safer due to suiciders only having 1 country, I tend to have AT LEAST 15m turrets raw (before D allies) at 50k acres. This is FFA. People have 16 countries and you should have more defence than alliance people. The risk is higher.
And if you talk about sustainability - yes. it is sustainable to hold that much military in your country.
