Flamey, there is a difference between Generalized Anxiety Disorder and regular anxiety. However, everyone with a phobia (heights, snakes, being trapped, dogs) does have a borderline personality disorder. The difference being it becomes a disease when it drastically affects how you live your daily life.

Odd that mental illness is not more prevalent in Somalia and Sudan. Perhaps if they had a better health care system, their incidence of mental illness would increase.

You can't really say one way or another if there is more mental illness in places lacking sufficent capacity to even identify the issue, let alone attempt to deal with them. Look at Guyana with a population of 750,000 and 3 psychologists. Instead of depression, anxiety, OCD, and bipolar, many people go to the Mad House with a diagnosis of obeah/voodoo.

there is a correlation between mental illness and lack of daylight in the winter.
Also there is a theory that suggests that the increase of symptoms of mental illness is today's society is partly due to the shift away from physical labour and hence giving people more time to think.
