what brand are you using?
WD, Hitachi, Seagate, Samsung.....etc....etc
I've always used WD myself, I inherited a few IBM's from other computers. But, I only buy WD for my systems. Haven't had a problem yet, of course I haven't invested in a TB yet. 500 MB is highest I've used so far, My next build will be with a TB HDD, since you have experience with them, tell me some of the ones you used that failed. So I'll know which ones to stay away from. While we're on the subject, do u have any info on the phantom HDD?

The only SeaGate I've had was the 80GB 2.5-inch SATA that came stock with my PS3 when I bought it in December 2007, and it crapped out last year. I'd gained enough disrespect from them before that happened with other hard drives of theirs. I've had a WD 250GB SATA in my PS3 and it hasn't had issues since. :)

Seagates don't have a good track record, I've been warned about them.

I used Seagate for years just out of some sort of misplaced brand loyalty, and continually had problems with them. I think in a period of 5 years, I probably went through at least 5 or 6 of them. I've had so many problems, that I have actually warned off my employees from using them.

It got to be like a dysfunctional relationship after a while - I'd get fed up and throw them out, they'd promise they had changed and beg me to take them back, and I took them back wishing it was true.

I've switched over to Western Digital, and haven't had a problem since. Those little Passport drives are stellar if you need portable storage.

I had a 320 gb seagate a few years ago. There seems to be some sort of problem with it that causes whichever lappies it connects to to get its motherboard fried. Dropped it a few times too =P The data is still there, but I just can't access it 99% of the time...

I have one I bought earlier this year for 97 bucks and it's a Western Digital 2TB "My Book" drive. It works great, no problems at all, even been dropped once, knocked off the desk by my kid's friend.

I find that hdd's are hit and miss. I've had 2 fail on me (out of 5). TBH I find that simply leaving the disk spinning all the time seems to be a lot more effective than anything else.
One of the ones that failed was more that the USB port got damaged somehow and I lack the expertese to fix this (although I suppose I could take it out of the case...).
sadly only solid state drives seem to be reliable nowadays

Well said, Martian. SSD's are the only TRULY reliable hard drives as they have no moving parts.

Leaving the drive running continuously does seem to extend the life of the drive, but that's the same with all electrically driven devices. It's the initial surge of power when you first turn it on that does the most damage to the device.

Think about it, when does a lightbulb blow? When you turn it on, they usually don't just fail while operating.

It's also a reason why I never turned my old computer off. The hardware lasted for 7 years without me having to reformat anything or replace anything other than a gfx card which I fried because of something I did.

I just wish SSDs weren't insanely expensive.. I find that they are about 10X as expensive/unit of storage as an hdd.
