Home remedies for the beginning of a cold?

woke up this morning with that scratchy tickley feeling at the back of my throat.

I immediatly went to the bathroom and did a nasal rinse hoping to catch it before it was a problem. Sadly i was in too deep.

Im pumping daytime cold and flu pills atm but is there anything you do to get a jump on the fluffty feeling im about to experience over the next couple days?

Yeah last time i got in fluff because i was taking tylenol with something that had tylenol so i was ingesting more then the alotted amount and had stomach cramps.

Was a hell of a time. I always ask the pharmacist now

Drink a lot of water.. take at least one or 2 glass of orange juice.. eat chicken and noodle soup + take one little shot of whiskey. :)

Vitamin C, I suggest popping a class of OJ 2 times each day.. to help in your fight. chicken broth is pretty good... I havn't been sick in a good 8 years.

go with Zicam, its pretty good within 12 hours of first experiencing symptoms

make sure u look at the active ingredients in the back of the box and make sure it has zinc, and not just plain Vit C

zinc is your friend.

The echo is good though, i usually just bunker in bed feeling like fluff for a few days then emerge a weak but less sick man and recoup.

The echo means that obviously the same things work for people so hopefully do the same for me

I'd go with mrford... if you don't like vegetables do a fruit fusion v8 you can'd taste the veg's and then add the other stuff.

I HATE V8 with a passion however i loaded it with tobasco and im getting it down slowly.

i sinus rinsed again and will take nighttime cold and flu pills.

Will see how i feel come morning, really cant afford to miss work :P

The lotta water plus lotta sleep always works for me. Don't really feel 100% better after the first day, but it's like, 20% per day, depending on how much water you can guzzle and how much sleep you can get.

There is a product called AirBorne and sometimes it can snuff out a cold that isn't too far in, as well as help prevent it.

I have never found anything that really helps though once you are into it.

Next time you feel that itchy feeling, try zinc gluconate. It will stop you from getting a full blown sore throat and cold, if you do it early enough. And if you catch it later instead of sooner, it will still make the cold last a shorter period.

Oh, and Airborne...the stuff that says 'Created by a teacher' on the package? So lame.

this might sound odd: but going to work out right when you are starting to feel sick tends to help as well as increases recovery speed (provided that the sickness isn't below your neck). Also the endorphins released by exercise really help a lot.

Obviously if you have a fever/lung infection exercise is a bad idea..

I blew some nice yellow gunk out last night and this morning when i woke up and im down to one nostril.

the pills seem to take the edge off and the intake of water and V8 and citrus seemed to help.

You want to use strong booze.. so appletons is fine.. even vodka or scotch works too. stay away from anything with sugar/syrup in it (bailey's, kahlua would be BAD)

I woke up with the same thing today.
Loads of water, vitamin C and I do the Emergen-C or Airbornne stuff. Which I am downing now.

Oh also....from when I used to drink. Hot water, add whiskey, honey, lemon and some sugar too. Hot Toddy ftw!!!

I know it seems lame but it is a quick way to intake half of the stuff mentioned in this thread. Some of it's key ingredients are Zinc and Vitamin C...

Also as Galleri and maybe other have mentioned, any dry hard liquor with a burn to it on the way down usually helps things. If not just keep drinking it and it will cure your ills till at least the next morning.

ya the hot totty is an old cold medication. Does the same thing as cold syrups..

Liquor makes you stupid and warms you up, and 'kills the infection', honey coats your throat so it doesn't hurt as much, caffeine in the black tea wakes you up a bit.
