I have to agree, I've recently been introduced to Total War, and I'm really enjoying it now, but Civ is the best. Although you have to stipulate, Civ2 and Civ4, were the best. I lost a lot of hours on those two games, but Civ3 was terrible. Also, just to be an fluff, Civ is not technically RTS, because it's turn based. :)

FPS: For me is easy, because, while I've played many that I liked, it's not generally my favourite genre. Therefore, GoldenEye for N64. Best multiplayer in an FPS EVER. *Laughs* Prox. Mines... in the Caverns.

RPG: This is really my favourite genre, despite that a majority of the games that are mass produced in Japan are utter drivel. That being said Final Fantasy IIX was one of the best games of any genre, ever. I have rarely played a game that developed such an emotional attachment with the characters. When Aerith died... Yeah. Rumors were that they were going to remake the game for the release of PS3. If they had, I was ready to buy a PS3, for that reason alone.

I played perfect dark more, it was much more fun for 1-2 people to play, but Goldeneye hands down is better for 3-4 people.

And prox in caverns with friendly fire and license to kill is pretty damn fun.

Pistols in facility is good too.

Have you played the original game or better yet the original Colonization? Those were truly great games. Civ3 had problems but it really was a great transition from the Civ1/Civ2 style to the Civ4 game. Civ4 does have a few scenarios that aren't turn based.

I did play the original Civilisation, many years ago, but I think that was just about the time when 2 was out, and it was superior. I don't remember 1 at all actually.

But I stand corrected about the scenarios in Civ4. I had forotten about that. I remember being shocked when I first tried to play it. Really, I didn't play scenarios too much in any of those games, I just played the single player campaign over and over on random settings, and tried to explore different ways of winning.

Also, I forgot about fighting games: you won't believe this one... Although I have a great nostalgia for Street Fighter II (I'll never forget how pissed my buddy Steve was that he couldn't beat me with any character) and also for Virtua Fighter ummm... 2 I think, the one for Sega Saturn, my favourite fighting game of all time is actually Eternal Champions. I can't even explain why, I just loved that game.

I'm also suprized that not even one Sierra game has been mentioned here. :P

This is an inspired choice. In my mind it's the best baseball game, and I look forward to a time when EA might get the rights back to make official baseball games again.

Other choices of mine:

Age of Empires II (played it a LOT in college)
Warcraft III
Legend of Zelda--Ocarina of Time, Link to the Past, Original Game
Mario Kart series (pretty much all of them, but I'd say Double Dash is my least favorite)
Epic Mickey

And Bsnake's choices are pretty rockin' too. :)

Those old Sierra games were great. Quest for Glory/Hero's Quest and the Space Quest series were my favorites, but LSL, Police Quest and King's Quest were all great games too. Those are games I wish they'd update and re-release. I'd play them all if they had even like circa 1995 graphics instead of the terrible circa 1988 graphics they actually have.

A couple others I forgot:
FF2 with Cecil the Dark Knight and FF3 with Terra for SNES. The last two summers when I've been on summer vacation, I've played through each of these again. Awesome storylines.

heh, yeah, I played a fluffload of AoE2 in college, as I said. My freshman year, there were about 6-10 of us that would play every night. We called it "After Dinner Age" or "ADA" and it was a daily thing at least during the week. Not that we wouldn't play on the weekends--it just wouldn't be right after dinner.

Counter Strike is another game I played a lot of.

FPS - Mercenaries 1 & 2, Army Of Two.

Racing - Need For Speed Most Wanted (I have a backwards compatible PS3, so playing this PS2 game is worth it)

Sports - No real interest. :P

Exactly, although I would say that 3 is different from all of them. However, having said that, although they are very different mechanically, the thing that I liked most about Civ4 when I first started playing it was that it reminded me of all the hours I spent playing Civ2. Don't know if that makes any sense, but it was just sorta a similar feeling, but you're right, a very different game.

But, I haven't played the Colonization expansion, I thought it was a stand alone game?

In addition, props to BSnake, it takes balls to call out a C64 game as one of your favourites. My favourite game for C64 was Jumpman. Do you know that there were something like 100 different levels for that game? Although, I also had a Dragon Riders of Pern game that I liked, text based RPG/stratagy.

I also love Civilization. I still remember the little sounds bytes when you won or lost a battle. But love them all, when they work.

For fighting and racing I have to go to N64, Mario Cart and Super Smash.

Spent many hours on Madden Series. I remember playing 98 Madden, at this point they didn't have music on the game. So, I would play my bestie boys cd, while dominating on madden.

Also, when I got bored with earth, I would play some Runescape now and then.

Yeah international soccer on the cartridge! I had that one. The players were hardly better than a single giant pixel... The ball was a barely rounded square... Awesome.

Another great for C64... California Games!

The C64 that I had we got with the 5 1/4 drive, but I do remember when this dude I knew got the punch to notch the disks so you could record on them, whoa that was mind blowing technology.

I also had a Batman game that was way ahead of it's time for C64. And right towards the end before NES took over gaming for the next decade, I had a game called something like Medeival Games, which was fun.

What the fluff are you talking about UA?!? :P

Naw, California Games had Skateboarding, hacky-sack, Ummm... roller-skating or something, I think.

But I do remember that my copy was pirated, and when it loaded the pirate's logo came up (it was a text rendering of Darth Vader's mask) and the PC speaker actually voiced a garbled sounding "Holy fluff!". I was blown away, because such technology as speech through computers did not yet exist.
