I have an old 80 gig hard drive laying around. I was wanting to store my music on it as a backup. Can I completely format it and just store music on it or do I need to install an OS on it?

You dont have to have an OS intalled.
You can put that HD in a PC that has another HD with an OS and read the music then.

Just make sure you change the jumper from master to slave on the 2nd hard drive.

either that, or you can buy an external HDD case, put the HDD in there, hook it up to a computer, and still have the same effect as putting it in the computer, just without the hassle of trying to connect an old hdd upto a new computer which uses sata (if you have one)

If your computer is old like the HDD, then the best and cheapest way is to do what ibujke and madjsp said

Having done both ways myself, if I did it again I'd just buy the enclosure.

if the HD is sata (small thin connector) then you don't have to worry about that anymore. The boot priority can be adjusted in the bios.

If its IDE (large flat connector), then you have to worry about whether your computer has the correct slot and you may have to adjust the jumper.

I agree with SaRaveok, its easy to buy an external case for your hard drive ($20-40) and then you can connect it to your computer via USB. Though it depends whether there is a computer store near where you live.
Not posting on AT as much because Maki/Steeps gave back some of my forums on GHQ. RIP my decade long blog, my blog even had replies from people who are no longer with us :(.

Sifos, it is worth it if you just want to back up things on it.

Minus Games, Movies, TV Shows, Porn and Music...

80GB is fluffing huge!

Not to forget, if you go external and eventually upgrade your box, it is simple to connect to the new one.
Done.

Thanks everybody for the suggestions and help. I'm just gonna store some pics and stuff on it for now and will eventually buy a external HD.
