2001 ford focus 1.4. When I'm about to stop at a junction etc when I push clutch pedal down and take foot off accelerator the engine revs up to about 1800 rpm for about 2-3 secs before dropping back down to about 800. Why is this happening and how do I fix it?

Clearly you have a squirrel or some rodent in the engine. Be careful. If they come in contact with the oil and antifreeze they can mutate. You dont want to deal with that fluff.

This is a very common problem on that year modle of focus unfortunately. I have a friend that has this problem, and we have replaced every vacume line, every sensor, everything on that engine. No avail.

http://forums.focaljet.com/...oor-mpg-hanging-revs.html

as you can see there you are not the only one with this problem. It has to be something sensor or ECM related. It could just be a problem in the coding, I really don't know. We are still trying to fix my friends, if we find anything out I'll let you know.

My experience tells me you're probably looking to replace the rotary skeeter valve. Make sure you install a type 2 valve.

Last time car broke down I mentioned it to the roadside assistance bloke and he plugged his laptop into the car and he said everything seemed fine but its still hanging

Well, I'm telling you what I know. Take it or leave it.

I don't really trust "roadside assistance" scanners however. Seems everytime I need a tow, my brand new bettery scans as bad. When I load test it myself, it's fine.

Either way, I have said my points, and given you a line to further help, and offered any further imformation that I may obtain.

It's a extremely common problem that no one has identified yet. That's about all I can tell you.

If you can't understand the simple terminology on that thread, you will not be able to fix this problem yourself. Not trying to be mean, just honest.

i can't think of anything as to why the throttle would be affected by engaging or releasing the clutch, other than load being released or applied to the drive train. does it return to idle normally if you rev the engine in neutral?

For ir to be such a widespread problem dibs, it has to be a design failure, or a ECM problem.

My friend has been trying to diagnose, with help from me, this problem for almost 2 years. Still no closer.

i dunno, is there some kind of device that controls the engine from over-reving if the clutch pedal is pressed in?

what happens when i press the clutch pedal?
well, it mechanically disengages the clutch.
sends a signal so that the cruise control disengages.
i don't see it doing anything other than that.

The engine may be over-reving because you're hitting the gas while you have the clutch down? Try taking your foot completely off the gas, and then using the clutch.

I can sell you a new Focus:)

Around here there's $3,000 Rebates. Replace your '01 with a new 11 and take advantage of the Ford Sync.

OR, I could sell you a 2010 for THOUSANDS less and you could still have Sync. Don't buy a new '11, the '12s are out and they will depreciate faster than a Madoff fund.

Dodge Neon SRT-4 they had a TSB for the same problem, the issue was the TPS (throttle position sensor) wiring, it could also be your TPS with is located on the throttle body.

on hondas most of the time its an issue with the IAC valve (Idle air control valve).

neither of those are necessarily the issue, but those are the reasons ive seen similar issues on those makes.

the car does not necessarily need to throw a check engine light for either of those to be the issue. they only way they can be tested is with a scanner that can data log the ECU to see if they are working within the proper parameters.

all in all a good package.... generally I use public transport...
