I always thought that the rictor scale was horrible though, it's exponential nature makes it extremely misleading.

1) No one actually uses the Richter Scale anymore since it is really only appropriate for SoCal.
2) Logarithmic scales are extremely helpful and make a lot of sense. At smaller magnitudes you are able to be more precise since you do not have to worry about instrument saturation or as large a frequency spectrum to consider. To make a scale linear in energy release (as opposed to moment) and to be able to have a current 10.0 earthquake you'd need your scale to go to 590,490,000,000,000. That would be a horrible scale.

it's the first time i've ever seen a building i've actually been in as a pile of rubble on the ground from an earthquake...

Really brings it home.

What kind of damage? We have a 5+ up here in Canada this past year that sank some nice potholes which took out some building foundation

christchurch had a 7+ last yr that lost no lives and didn't have huge amounts of damage.

now a 6+ that has killed and done alot of damage..

shows how important location and depth can be to the amount of damage done.

well, what then master would that 6.3 that the USGS labeled it as on the RICHTER SCALE be called?

I can only seem to find it labeled as a 6.3. Kinda funny for a system that "no one uses anymore" please enlighten me

Could you show me where the USGS said it was a 6.3 on the Richter Scale? Looking at the earthquake report the USGS emailed me it looks like 6.3 is the initial moment magnitude.

So technically it's not called the Richter scale anymore, it's called the Moment Magnitude scale. Is it really worth fighting over here? The numbers are the same - it was devastating and people died.

Glad you made it through with only property damage, Scodey - although I am sorry to hear about your home. :(

The numbers are not the same. It is not like the scale was simply renamed or something. The Richter Scale was the first modern earthquake scale, devised by Charles Richter in the early 1900's. It was calibrated to the local geology of Southern California based on the amplitude of a certain type of seismograph. The Moment Magnitude Scale is based on the moment release of an earthquake, which actually tells you something fundamentally about the earthquake. There is a definite difference.

You're right though, I am sorry I tried to make the world a more educated place.

For a company to be able to handle earth quake insurances, they would have to big enough to get clients in many different locations. Only signing insurances in a single location is a pretty suicidal business :P

Ah yeah, it is always tragic when people die from anything. The death toll is definitely constant independent of how we characterize the earthquake. I guess the silver lining is this could have been a lot worse considering what we know about it.

you know how the traffic go, it dont
the radio could play my song, but they wont
i can have better luck finding nemo

and if i find a lable, who is the man, across the table
some pencil neck geek, who don't know fluff
tryna' tell me what's a goddamn hit
you can be from L.A, and be the absolute best
and still don't get no respect from the west

That is an excerpt from an email I received from Scode today. No one else spells quite like he does ;)
