I never cheated, but the only appeal that I could ever see in it was that it gave you an advantage over others. The thing is that, since in FFA everyone is running multies there is no advantage available. In the end, you get competition of exactly the same level but are required to make a far larger time commitment.

Why would I possibly want to do that?

That is true, but there are still other things that you can do. Running varying strategies, self-farming, market transfers/buyouts, etc. There are many things that you can only do as an alliance in 1a that you can do by yourself by either running multies or playing FFA :-P
