does anyone out there know a way of getting rid of pigeons that doesn't involve weapons (no liscence) or predators (I want a pet hawk but I don't have one ..)
Doesn't have to involve killing them.. just driving them off my balcony :P

Depends on how much you want to mess up your view.

At our local uni, they a kind of twisted wire, with small barbs (not "normal" barbed wire, smaller barbs") that is rolled like a spiral and placed on where the pigeons would sit. Works pretty well. Better than spikes, because they can usually find a way to sit between those.

It doesn't look too beautiful tho...

If yoou don't feel like buying a net, take some fishing line and make a mesh out of that. It's not very noticeable and cheap. You can also try moth balls.

@fake owl: pigeons unfortunately can figure out the difference. If a plastic owl won't fool you, it won't fool them.

flamethrower: I can make a home-made one quite easily with a hairspary bottle and a lighter. Sadly I'ld probably burn more than just the pigeons. Plus a flying fireball in a residential area is probably not a good thing.

nets: yeah probably will resort to that

rice: tried it. Didn't work

one year I used a bunch of plastic knives along the balcony railing. That works decenetly well.

get an arseload of pepper (cayenne pepper, cinnamon, pepper are said to work) and sprinkle it on the area - they will fluff off soon enough ;)

Failing that, after they've been rolling around in cayenne pepper, roast them !

POISON the fluffers, RAT poison is bound to work as pigeons are the rats of the sky :)

If you are worried of Animal rights or some sort of fluff organization fining your ass to poverty, then just use an ultra sonic gadget to scare their fluff....

oh and GLUE, you can put glue in your balcony and get them trapped, but don't go the stupid way and free the bird, you get your BBQ ready and COOK the bastard alive, the others are bound to see this nightmare and fly the fluff out of your home.

I had the EXACT same problem and got a small owl from my parents (who had a couple at the house to scare ducks away from the pool -- they work on ducks! :p)

and it seemed to work fine until the wind knocked it over

Bakery across the street from my office has a fake owl and speakers that play predatory bird calls. The pigeons stay away.

A live terrier will be far more effective than a fake owl though.

there are quite a few places with bird noise makers. its a really high pitched ping that goes off every 10-20 seconds. seems to work well.

The ledges on our building at work have what looks like 3 wires at different levels. I'm not sure how it works. Maybe it's the small barbed wire and I can't really tell or it may have some sort of minute electrification. But it does work. I have never seen a pigeon on our building and see very little in the way of pigeon crap around the building. Down the street near the Metro Station I end up getting shat on once a year. Stupid pigeons.

they are creatures of habit, break the habit long enough they will find another hang out spot. Might need to find where they are nesting if it isnt right where you are. Destroy/block them. They nest in the same spot for years.
