Pumpernickel is the best of all the breads for the purposes of toasting to accompany eggs or for ham sandwiches.

Agree? Disagree? Discuss. Frivolous statements endorsing the superiority of whole wheat should be interpreted as trolls and dealt with accordingly.

I vehemently disagree. Wheat is *THE* bread to be toasted as an accompaniment for eggs. For a ham sandwich this becomes more debatable depending upon toppings and condiments however sourdough and white/Italian both have very compelling arguments as the best for ham sandwiches.

Sourdough and Italian can be pressed into service for sandwiches and are entirely respectable choices. However for the standard ham sandwich consisting of bread, ham, mustard with the possible addition of one or more of the following (cheese, lettuce, tomato) - pumpernickel trumps them all. It even beats out rye, which is probably the more popular choice. I suspect that this is due to the prevalence of rye and relative scarcity of pumpernickel more than any perceived superiority of rye.

I always thought pumpernickel was some kind of edible cork.

Thank you GE.

While rye is an amazing bread it is not on the same level as even pumpernickel for ham sandwiches. Anything beef though, rye wins.

Pumpernickel is the preferred bread for most everything. I agree, Pumpernickel is "Da Bomb" for making sandwiches of any kind.

Can I get a witness?

Pumpernickel is just a type of rye bread that was baked to a very dark color. The distinction on the quality of breads has less to do with the actual name of the bread and more to do with ingredients. My home made wheat bread will be fresher and better for me than the preserved and corn syrup fortified wheat bread from the grocery store.

I'll take any type of home made bread over any type of the crappy bread they sell in plastic bags for any purpose.

Wonder bread should be sued for false advertising. I don't know what it is, but I wouldn't call it bread.

Pumpernickel is good. Real good. So is rye. A pump-rye marble bread is even better.

Yeah, I agree that the pump-rye marble bread is a very appealing presentation.
