I am looking for a cheap way to connect my laptop to the internet while I'm on the road and traveling. I was thinking this could be a good way, but hoping for opinions or suggestions here.

No smartphone? quite a few of them can broadcast wifi, or
Get a bluetooth dongle and connect to a bluetooth phone with an internet connection, same as tethering without the cord.

I have a droid x, it can broadcast wifi, but while in wifi the phone itself doesn't receive data, so no texts.

But then I have 2 laptops my acer is basic, so I can leave it in my truck and I don't have to worry about it being stolen.

But my vaio.has built in bluetooth so I can run my data connection through bluetooth and I still receive phone/data.

So I'd personally just get the phone to work, pointless, to buy another item to lose, forget, have stolen.
