It strikes me as extremely odd that "an historic" is considered proper grammer - it really makes me a bit batty every time I hear it, to be honest.

I'm originally an infrastructure consultant with an emphasis on court management and automation, specifically in developing and executing implementation plans for reform projects. Spent 6 yrs working overseas for USAID funded projects, then moved back here (USA) and now consult for several different court management software firms and national programs. It was a great job, and one I hope to go back to when my son is a bit older.

I also own a mid-sized DJ company. We do about 250-300 events/yr, and I have 18 people working for me. It's the best job I've ever had!

I'm also currently in school for a masters in web programming - as I've discovered lately that I really enjoy that end of the production chain as well.

yeah....I get bored easily...I tend to heap too much on my plate.

NOW3P: I think that may be more of a British thing. I'm sure others could correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe the British pronunciation of words like historic is basically with a silent "h."

Of course, grammar/usage is so dynamic that I doubt anyone would question you if you said "a historic" assuming you pronounce the "h."

Anyway, despite the fact that I made the joke that I'm judging you all based on your grammar, I find grammar to be just as boring as anyone else.

I will say I find it incredibly annoying when the internet/texting shorthand starts entering spoken language. I heard a kid say "OMG" about 4 times when I was out renting a movie the other day.

Not "Oh My God," but actually saying just the three letters "O-M-G." It was like nails on a chalkboard to me--I honestly wanted to turn around and yell at the kid to just say "Oh my God!" or "Oh my gosh!"

Don't really know the rules here. Just going by what sounds best to me.

It's AN historic occasion.

BUT

There's A history book on the table. (wouldn't say "an" there.)

Explain that, professor Twain.

MM: English is a wacky language. That's how I explain it. ;)

NOW3P: nice video, heh. I'd quote the best line, but you pretty much already did that :)

Eddie Izzard is one of the funniest comedians I've ever seen - his routine in French/German/English is freakin hilarious! I like Brian Regan's particular style of artistically butchering the English language as well. :-)
