thats actually a terrible idea. that defeats the whole purpose of why the new GDI was put in place. youre basically saying you want to farm a bunch of people then join GDI to be protected to you cant be retalled.

what's the point of making GDI optional if it is a no brainer? There has to a cost, and it needs to be significant.

$5/acre for 1500 turns is $90mil if you carried 12000 acres for all 1500 turns. The benefits outweigh the costs if you think it would prevent just 1-2 attacks. Since people usually don't do just 1-2 special attacks, it's highly worth it if you think there is any chance that you could draw a moron's attention.

5k acres is 25k turn for gdi. a 5k acre casher is making what, 2m a turn with tech? i hardlly call that unmanageable. its all relative. the bigger you get the more it cost but the bigger you are the more you make.
