Background:
I am thinking of giving my girlfriend a new laptop for our 6th anniversary and propose at the same time..

Thinking of making something like a offline webpage that she can click and stuff then I can put pics and messages and then propose on the spot...

Assistance needed:
Erm, I have never created any website in my life.. So I dunno where to start.. Any simple software that I can use to create a website that can be viewed offline (since I will propose in a restaurant) and maybe put online later?

You can just make html documents and display them offline. My desktop used to be a "webpage" so I could click on my desktop to get all the links I used. I even had an Earthstats login on my desktop.

That being said w3schools has good html tutorials. A lot of stuff can easily be stolen from other webpages by looking at the source code.

If you've never done webdesign, you've probably never done anything with html. So I went searching for some open source (i.e. FREE) software that will cause you as little grief as possible.

Microsoft FrontPage is the easy way to do web pages with no experience (yes, all you experienced web designers who are calling me the devil right now, I realize it's unforgivably bloaty and craps up your nice clean code). But it's expensive. One good open source alternative seems to be KompoZer:

I took a look at w3schools but I don't think I can figure HTML out and do the website in 1.5 weeks... Planning to fly to Hong Kong next Friday and propose next next Tuesday..

I have downloaded KompoZer and have played with it a little.. Seems manageable!!! Think I will go with this for the proposal first.. When I have more time maybe I will do it the proper HTML way for my wedding website or something..

I normally just use a text editor....

but what you're looking for is a program called Microsoft FrontPage

it will do exactly what you're looking for, and it's relatively user friendly. It's a WYSIWYG (What you see is what you get) HTML editor which works

anything you create offline can be put online with little effort, so I would worry more about making it :)

Frontpage doesn't exist anymore, it's been replaced by a thing called Expression. I haven't tried it but I expect it to be rather similar.

Anyway, if you expect that your web designing career will be limited to creating a little site for your girl then you can download the trial version from http://www.microsoft.com/expression/. You'll have 60 days to play with it, more than enough methinks.

Here's a better idea.

Buy her a laptop. Drill a small hole through the keyboard. Insert penis. Sit on the couch with the laptop towards you as if you are using it. Ask her to come see her new laptop.

Then say "surprisewillumryme?" as if it were one word. Then pronounce "lol" as lawl -- say this out loud.

Oh, and Ron... once you've got a little site designed in KompoZer (or whichever alternative you may choose), you'll have the html code available to view - those programs always have a tab or some kind of method to display the actual code. It's a good way to get familiar with the way html works.

You probably don't want to actually LEARN html using this method though - because anything that takes your actions and converts them to html invariably chucks a bunch of unnecessary code in there. But it's a good way to familiarize yourself with what html looks like, and to make the connection to what does what. :D

KompoZer is probably going to be the best free wysiwyg webpage maker you'll find. I haven't used it but I used it's predecessor NVU a long time ago and it was fairly easy to use.

I used KompoZer and made a page and wanna try uploading it online (though for the proposal I will only access it offline but I thought since I will need a domain eventually might as well sign up now so I can use it for testing..)

I was about to sign up for Google domain but my fren said I may not be able to upload my HTML code into the Google domain..

Anyone familiar with that? Can I upload HTML into Google domain? if not, anything affordable to recommend? I have a specific domain name in mind already.. =)

i think you should just look up "CSS templates", they give you an html page that you could edit the filler text along with designs already made up.
