Wow, this is a program you are gona use like daily and you cant pay $20 for it?

2 bucks per year to get free updates (10 years as home user and 1 year as business user (although they get discount)) and when they change registration code system needs to request new code (every year i think).

i have never paid a single dollar for an operating system, let alone any other program (save games)

That's the single most important software on your computer, and you should have warranty and support and full documentation provided for you on it and the only way to reliably guarantee that is to purchase it.

Say what? The only required warranties you should have on your pc a hardware and business critical software warranty. There is no warranty for Windows OS... just software packages if you really desire to not use open source/freeware. So, you could have Linux (which is free) and buy a warranty/support for software on that platform. Documentation is out there, for free too :P Support for any platform is plentiful on forums, blogs, etc etc.

ive gotten on mirc 4 times since may.... and at the present time. i dont think im gunna be playing for a while.. so buying it now is pointless....

But seriously, if you want a free OS, just get a Linux distro. If you have some familiarity with that type of OS, you can get Red Hat, Debian, CentOS, Mint, etc. (seriously, quite a few to choose from). If you kind of like the Mac OS feel, grab Ubuntu. Usually works pretty well right off the disc. Super easy, well documented and very well supported. I think Ubuntu pledges support for 5 years after stable release date.

If you have some older computers around the house just collecting dust and windows had dropped support for the OS that is on it (like XP, Vista, etc.) you can install a Linux OS and have a useful computer again.
