You try not to be "fat". That means to have more acres than those around you in the scores list.
Fat countries attract the attention of predators.
The way to have higher networth on less acres is to have more military. Military and to a slightly less extent land (and the buildings on land) are the main elements which contribute to networth.
The main thing wrong with your country is all those undeveloped acres. It costs progressively more to erect buildings as your acreage grows. So by and large try to build as you grow.
This is, happily, a tough game. There is a surprisingly large amount of stuff to get to understand. That is why it has survived since the last millenium. Most people who play have played for a long time. So don't expect to do great for a while.
The single biggest determinant as to whether you will do well or badly is the amount of time you have to devote to it. Five or ten minutes a day means you will always lag behind. A couple of hours and you'll keep up. An afficianado spends quite a bit more than that.
There is fun to be had, however, whether you have five minutes a day to spare or can check in whenever you like.
(PS Two last points. You don't say whay your gov.t is. As you are going in for Industrial production you should be a Communist. Secondly, I suspect that, like many complete beginners, you think that positive cash flow is an objective. It isn't. As a Commie Indie you run a substantial deficit and you fund that from sales of military. Specialisation is the key.)
