btw if you are going to custom build i suggest:
buying both a SSD and a HDD

use the HDD to store your media
and use the SSD to run your OS and applications (or programs for you microsoft freaks)

I do like apple products however I don't want to pay what they think it is worth :p

Yeah SSD drives tend to be a bit pricey... I think I'll get like a 120 GB SSD and then when i need more I'll buy some cheaper HDD.

I wanted to keep the case cheap but if it builds up dust really bad I may look for something else. I've always had good luck with antec power supplies though.

What ano said.

SSD for OS and apps
HDD for everything else

HDD speed can't touch SSD, and eventually when the price drops you can upgrade your hds

SSDs are great at accessing things such as loading your OS and applications, which is why i suggest getting a SSD and HDD, so you keep OS/Applications and Media files separately.

i picked up a 3.5" 1tb hdd for macbook pro last month for £87. hdds are so cheap - you'd be silly not to buy one at the same time (unless the ssd price cripples your finances)

i think the reading time of files (i.e. media) isn't that "much" better on an SSD compared to a HDD, though of course it depends on manufacturer etc.

due floods in thailand where alot hdds are made.

nice setup you have in mind but you could consider getting core i5-2500k processor and psu might be bit underpowered.

Get a case without a power supply, and a non-antec power supply; corsair I'd go with.

As of blowing up the last server (before EE, Evo2025's server) with a bad power supply, and my gaming box shortly thereafter, I will never again buy a cheap power supply; save $30-50 and kill thousands of dollars...

also, SSD is good, but it depends how much you want to put on it; if it's just a gaming box, go with SSD, if you want something for permanent storage of pictures &etc (ie, home server) go with partitions of 2-3 standard HD's in RAID1

RAID1 is technically fine with 2, but I've had so many drives die (and another one in the server dying atm) that I'd recommend 3 just in case you don't get time to replace a dead drive *IMMEDIATELY* and then the next one fails....

Intel is for limp wrists. AMD baby :P

you could get a 60gb SSD and a 500GB HD for the same price as a 120GB SSD. windows is only 20gb so the 60 will leave you with around 30-35gb for storage.

whatever you do make sure you get a sata3 not a sata2.

antec bp430 (the one included in the case) is actually one of the decent cheap power supplies out there. but if you are going to buy a separate power supply id recommend corsair as well, one of the 500w or less cx series. or seasonic's 500w or less psus

In tests between sata3 vs sata2, there are benchmark differences, but few real differences for boot up and file transfer. If the sata3 price is about the same, then it makes sense, but overall I wouldn't spend too much extra for sata3 at this point.

I used to run AMD in all my machines, overclocked of course :D, but as of late intel has been beating AMD in performance. AMD needs to pick up their game.

And Qz you don't like antec PSU's? I just might take your advice though I'd have to zap all my hardware over 50 bucks.

1. sadly intel graphic isn't that suitable for hard gaming.

2. intel has (slightly) better processors than amd.

3. amd makes good video cards and nvidia is only real competitor on gaming graphics.

4. haven't seen any troubles on amd (ati) card and intel processor (incl. mine radeon 4870 and core2@quad).

no, i don't like antec PSU's, those are what blew up two of my computers! hate!

antec used to (years ago!) buy their powersupplies from seasonic which had good PSU's, then they switched to some generic el-cheapo supplier, and now they are, on average, much suckier than they used to be...

mhmm I'm not saying you *WILL* have problems; just that there's a higher percentage of people that do; (HYPOTHETICALLY) if 5% of people experience a problem after 2-5 years with antec, compared to 0.5% for something like corsair, is that worth the $50 ? To me, absolutely...

Also my server is/was basically just a desktop, with 5-7 hard drives in it... (no video card though!)

brand (amd/intel/nvidia) doesnt matter, the specific model does.
