If you're going to remake an iconic song - unless it is intended as a tribute (see: Brian Setzer's Mack The Knife, for one example) - then you better bring something new and original to the table. I couldn't distinguish at all Everfly's version of We Belong from Benetar's original. I generally like Shakira, but her version of I'll Stand By You just seemed weak, both figuratively and literally, when compared to the Pretenders.

I have long considered music to be relatively cyclical (Seriously, who would have predicted 20 years ago the reemergence of the Musical?), but now I'm starting to wonder if it is also starting to stabilize in some regards. Today's popular music seems to be combining a lot of elements that made previous musical fads from the past 50 years popular.

In some ways, Music like the water in a toilet bowl as its being flushed. It goes from one extreme side of the bowl around to the other and back around and around, all the while converging on a central point - the sewer.

Music is not dead.

And if you think it is, you're not listening hard enough.

I don't think music is dead, but there is a lot of dead weight. There is still quality out there, you're just not "listening hard enough." [EDIT: Nice turn of phrase :-]

In some ways though, its easier to find good music now than ever before. For example, I can simply go on Youtube, by passing the grip radio and CDs (and casettes, 8-Tracks, and LPs previously) have had on the industry and find rare gems, original material, or fresh takes on popular themes (like this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l0i4GunURRY )

There's still some quality music out there....you just have to look for it. Of course if you're listening to the radio/top 40 you're never going to hear anything original.

So far as originality, just in the top 200 Guerillaz and Gnarls Barkley pop to mind, and The Streets from the British charts...and the top 200 isn't exactly known for originality as a whole.

oh but for real, i haven't really heard much in the last 5 years thats very different, but music can and will never die.. i just haven't been looking or i am sure i could find new bands that are good.. the issue now is everything is over produced in the mainstream pop culture.

basically it has gotten to a point where people are pretty much told what they like by MTV. Real music fans know theres more out there then just that and we also realized some people have no taste in music lol
