Hi All,

As promised, the new captcha system is finally finished!

Now, multiple devices are tracked independently, and on each you will have to answer a captcha once per week, assuming you have JS enabled. If you don't have JS enabled, you will get a captcha every login. Most (99%) of people should have JS enabled, so that should not be a problem.

As an example:

05:00 Login to computer : captcha
06:00 Login to phone : captcha
07:00 Login to computer : NO captcha
08:00 Login to phone : NO captcha
09:00 Login at work: captcha
10:00 Login to phone: NO captcha
12:00 Login at work: NO captcha

...

6 days later, same 3 devices, NO captcha

Then, on the 7th day, you will get prompted for a captcha IF YOU ARE NOT BEING ATTACKED (last 150 seconds)! If you *are* being attacked, you will get prompted the next day, on the 8th day, whether or not you're being attacked. However, as long as you have JS enabled, you'll be allowed to click the Delay 8 hours button *ONCE*, as long as it's not the first time you're on that device.

Hopefully this will alleviate some of the captcha issues for some people, while still having a significant speedbump for bots & babysitting scripts.

Regards,

-qzjul & the EE Dev Team

Between captchas for logging in on mobile, then PC, then work, then mobile etcetera throughout the day (plus all three bonuses), I was seeing upwards of 9 captchas. Every day. -.-

Should be a very nice solution - thanks qz.

Also, if you're still getting the captcha every time, try hard-refreshing the login page, I changed the javascript on there, so you need the newest version.

I don't get it, if the captcha doesn't come up when you're being attacked, how would it stop bots from walling?

There's a bug if you're using internet explorer, we'll get that fixed soon.

blid: It doesn't come up if you're walling if:
a) you've already entered a catpcha with the device some days earlier
b) you have JS enabled

otherwise one comes up

K, this *should* be working for those with saved passwords in the Login form AND people who use IE (at least IE10...)

Let me know if there's any more issues....

How come stuff works differently in IE?

Who the heck uses IE anyway? Do you have statistics about the proportion of users/sessions that use each browser?

IE, FF, Chrome, Safari have different engines and no page looks same in those browsers (not even with FF and Seamonkey and those use same engine).

in many workplaces IE is only possible browser (outside portable browsers) and IE8-10 have ~50% market share (mobile not counted).

Not even close Marshal:
I was back in mid 2008, bot nowhere close now..
http://www.w3schools.com/...ers/browsers_explorer.asp

IE total 11.8 %

10: 3.6 %

9: 2.8 %

8: 4.7 %

7: 0.6 %

6: 0.1 %

wow people still use IE 6? IE 8 and lower only have 5%. IE only has a total of 11%.

depends source, if mobile browsers are counted then w3c's numbers are somewhat accurate (chrome (or whatever is in android os) leads and safari is 2nd and then come rest).

I sent you a PM Serpentor; basically the latest device you've been using must not have JS enabled, as it's not responding properly

AxNiZe: your Opera browser isn't responding with JS properly (Opera/9.80 (Android 4.1.2; Linux; Opera Mobi/ADR-1306261156) Presto/2.11.355 Version/12.10) ; I'll have to try this on all my different browsers i guess =/ I use chrome mainly on both desktop and mobile &etc

Safari on my iPhone is all I care about. That's 99% of my activity. My macbook is rarely used because I never get to take it out of my house. Lol. It's shared by the family, which means dad is last on the list of users. Lol

Can you check again that JS is enabled? I should almost just put an indicator somewhere on the site... portal perhaps?
