Topic title still wrong. The reason 0.9999...=1 is because ... implies that it is a recurring number that will approach infinity making the difference non-existent. If you put 10,20,50 9's in there then it is not true as there is a clear termination point.

But in Sweden we are more tolerant of .99999999999. We let it choose what it wants to be. .99999, 1, an attack helicopter, or a hippopotamus it doesn't matter to us.

well you could think of it like this though.

Lets say I order 1 Large Pizza from Dominos- Hawaiian and it gets delivered to my house. In transit, the delivery guy shook the pizza a lil bit and some of the crust molecules fell off the pizza and onto the driver's seat. When he delivers my pizza do I tell him that he only delivered 0.999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999 of my pizza or do I consider it 1 pizza?

So explain to me again how a banker might say this is significant.

Yet you look in your bank account and you can have 3.96 or 3.97 etc. Interest is not added up in denominations of 5 cents and the bankers problem would be one of volume where those numbers add up real fast.

Either way, these analogies are bad proofs. If you want to prove .999... = 1, it is easy enough to prove. If you want to prove .999 not recurring is 1.... well, good luck.

If you have 0.9 repeating then you also have 0.0 repeating... there can be no 0.00000...1 because the 9s go on forever.

So... 0.9999 repeating + undefined = 1

The difference between 0.99 repeating and 1 is so infinitesimally small that we cant even distinguish the difference in real numbers.

So the banking analogy doesnt work either.
